Essentially the parent commenters are talking about too different things, one is talking about the first bullet point and the other is talking about the third.

To be honest I'm struggling to think of any languages released in the last 5 years or so which don't have type systems. Obviously they exist, but I don't think they're as common at the moment.

Which unstable libraries are you thinking of? I think you can silence the dead code warnings by either marking the field `pub` or prefixing it with an underscore.

I just can't comprehend how something as trivial as indexing can be a deal-breaker for someone. I write 0-based most of the time, but I can think of as many advantages for 1-based indexing as I can for 0-based. The only time I can unde

Can you give some examples of horribly clumsy prepared statement APIs? Every DB API I've ever used has looked like query("INSERT INTO table VALUES (?1, ?2, ?3)", "a", "b", "c") or someth

But specifically in the case of entering a name into a form, shouldn't a SQL database be able to handle arbitrary UTF-8 text when used correctly?

Obviously keep in mind the various caveats that come with benchmarks, but it seems that Swift is at least capable of achieving C-like performance[1] in some circumstances . [1]: https://benchmarksgame.alioth.debian.org/u64q

Most languages use some sort of interface whereby if you implement certain methods for a type then that type can be iterated over using a for loop.

To be honest I think there are good arguments to both sides, and I don't think there is really a one size fits all solution here. If you use unsigned you've got to pay attention to certain corner cases, if you use signed you'

If that were to happen I expect they would devise some sort of bytecode to use, probably with a 1=>1 mapping to the textual representation.

For those wondering about segfaults specifically in Rust (I know it's not the point of the blog post but it might be interesting to others), this thread talks about why they occur/whether they'll ever be eliminated entirely:

Yeah, as soon as I hit "Another kind of performance" it became pretty obvious to me (IMO at least) that this was a thinly veiled opinion piece on static vs dynamic. And at the end of this day this is an argument with no clear winn

Correct me if I'm wrong but can't you also run arbitrary code while installing packages? Either way I'm not saying `curl | bash` is good, I'm just trying to point out that people have a very knee jerk reaction to it and
