apt-get install whatever from any ubuntu repository Not sure about X11 apps, but whatever. Largely this makes running a special win32 build of redis for whatever dev you're doing unnecessary. I'm currently running windows on this

It's being auto updated on a monthly cadence - not too different from Chrome. Some releases are big, some are small. I wouldn't write off a project that has a team that's set up to do that.
