Two counter-arguments. First, it's not "sell", but "give for free under a subpoena". Second, it's not causation (they're doing it so they can gather info), it's correlation (they will gather info when they're able to). The end result's the

The IP situation is interesting. Was there any code re-use? Does the code you wrote belong to Sparrow? If the answer is "no" to both, you may be able to release it.

It would start to get interesting if the simulation could predict results outside the scope of the input data. E.g. no-one tried putting the cell into environment X and using stimuli Y, see how well the simulation can predict the results. T

With digg, there are descriptions for each link (besides the title). Might seem like a minor thing, but I still miss it on reddit.

Say, we end up with 100x faster but 100x bigger transistors. A core that's 100x smaller (transistor-count) is not necessarily 100x slower. With a 100x clock speed-up, however - propagation delays will be the main limiting factor for speed.

This is for anyone who was assuming that Skype wasn't wire-tappable. But then again, I don't know why anyone would assume that in the first place.

That's actually why I brought that up. I'm quite interested in ideas that have never been done before. (Hardware examples are non-typical FPGA use, modern trinary processors, using PID-like "overdrive" to speed up digital transistor switchi

This is true, and as far as I see - this is an inherent limitation. Dedicated, static ASICs will always be faster or more efficient. However - I think there's some interesting work to be done in hybrid approaches. For example, besides FPGA

Soft cores, processors (gpu/cpu/etc) that you put onto an FPGA, are quite an interesting beast. The way it is now is that you can flash whatever physical hardware that can fit - if you had access to Intel Pentium 1 source code, you could th

I'd use something like this, but there's the chicken & egg problem. Thing is: the content already exists, but it's spread and fractured across the net. Try making a content aggregator first, with a layer of UI + comments on top, then sl

My suggestion isn't quite going to be a link, but here it goes. Get a hobby. Programming, sport, (specific) art, etc. There is a myriad of niche communities for all sorts of things, and I would argue that the more in-depth creative ones are

Just curious, but why not inches / cm instead of points?

There are a few fundamental, hard problems : energy and transportation. Amazon is trying to solve a subset of the latter here. However, I like to see/feel some things in person before buying. I often go through lot of items before finding "

I think what he meant was: "Let's hope that this research leads to some simulated animals [much later down the road]".

This is definitely the way forward. In the past, the research has focused on re-creating non-trivial neural networks. However, the network is nothing without the organism - sure, you can examine the internal oscillations - but that hasn't l

Yep - awesome author. I'll definitely be taking a look at some of his other articles. IMHO - the reason for the lack of IQ right now is that evolution is slow. We haven't really needed high IQ (that badly) for more than, say, 500 years - wh

I fully agree - The author seems to be confusing "daily" and "only". I wouldn't want to go to a race track in a Toyota Camry. On the other hand, for most people, a Camry is all they ever need.

As for me - I'm waiting for a non-Apple laptop that can fit this screen, it's 1.6:1. (I'm writing this on a 1080p 15" thinkpad with a swapped screen)
