To give a concrete example, let's say I want to show that I can influence a coin flip with my mind in order to produce a heads result every time. I do this by publishing trials where each instance involves me flipping a coin four times

I think it's price discrimination. As I understand it hardcover books have much higher profit margins. The major fans want to buy a book ASAP and if hardcover is the only option they'll buy that. But if all editions are available

My game developer friends mentioned something similar–that expansion packs were much more profitable than building new games. Because the expansion could take ~10% of the time but would generate 50% of the sales of the original. This was in

You always have tradeoffs. Which tradeoffs make sense depend on the culture you want to foster, the size of your company, and probably a hundred other factors. Transparent criteria for salary mean that you avoid the politics associated with

Keep in mind you see strong selection bias. First, you only hear about extremely good or extremely bad cases. Second, on a site like Hacker News, you're more likely to hear about the bad HR departments. Most HR people are at least some

The Wikipedia article claims air pollution from living in New York or Boston is 30 times worse than the risk from living with a smoker, though that was in 1979. Presumably air pollution has become much less severe since then. Does anyone kn

If the side length isn't constrained to integers, the expected volume is 39 inches cubed. In a bit more detail: take the integral of x^3 (the volume function) from 1 to 5 and you get 5^4/4 - 1^4/4 = 624/4 = 156. Then we

This is a fairly interesting philosophical question. Personally I view (and use) Math as a set of abstractions to understand the world, and use Mathematical Logic to help make Math more rigorous and proofs more checkable. But if it turned o
