I find trance music extremely unobtrusive and yet motivating. Almost everything else is distracting. I am a sworn procrastinator, yet as soon as I turn on one of Armin van Buurens radio sessions, I can do an entire days work in two hours.

I have given up on waiting for VMWare Tools to catch up and switched to VirtualBox from Sun. http://www.virtualbox.com Unless there is some strange functionality you need from VMWare that isn't supported in VirtualBox, I suggest giving it

Arguing that C attracts the smartest developers is pure trolling, there is no possible way to back up that assertion. I would argue that the smartest programmers are always attracted to whichever tool is best for whatever job they are doing

I wrote one of these calculators in 2000 for a bank, my first paid job out of college. I have no idea what happened with it, but it was in VB (don't ask), and took about 2 days to write. If I'm feeling brave later, I may have a look to see

Agreed. There are a few groups around who still keep this kind of spirit alive. Seeing what the guys in the demoscene can to with 64k is truly amazing, but what they do with 4k can blow your mind.

While I'm not too sure that understanding the CAFEBABE stuff is truly helpful for improving Java performance, I definitely agree its helpful to know what's going on in there. Bytecode usually decompiles into very neat code since the mapping

While I wouldn't agree that programmers need to learn machine code, I would definitely recommend that they at least learn some ASM and poke around in a few programs with a decent disassembler. Seeing and understanding how a program actuall

I managed to get quite a few excellent tips out of this discussion. I found a far less buggy terminal, and discovered a feature of Windows I didnt know existed. Seems like a good deal to me...

Good point, maybe we just have less money in Africa :D A Macbook Pro is currently going for around $3500(USD), so its really hard for me to convince myself its worth it.
