No, that isn't it, re-read the article. The illusion is supposed to be that three flashes that are not evenly spaced, or are even spaced out of order (1--3-2) get perceived by the brain as evenly-spaced an in order. Look at the explana

I wonder to what extent our brains also back-fill in other, more complicated cause-and-effect information. If a certain cause-and-effect is more logical to our brains, does it simply recreate the memory of our perception to the more logical

Thanks for working out the cause of the bug, I thought I was going mad. You mentioned another version of the gif. Is this one we can find somewhere?

True. It's as if any piece could kill the king in transition. And yet other pieces can't kill that pawn in passing. Only another pawn. We shouldn't try to find too much logic.

Sure, but we don't have the same rule for a rook or bishop "passing" through a square where a pawn could strike it in passing. It's just it's own unique rule, born from a period of transition between pawns only bein

Presumably there are a mind-bogglingly-huge number of unique board state transitions. It's virtually impossible for the same game of chess to be played twice, except for silly scholar's-mate type games. Almost every single game in

Right, but the error there is the use of the word "caramelize," which used to have a fairly loose meaning (generally meaning to soften and turn a caramel color) and now people insist must align with the scientific meaning. But the

Agreed. Taking the time to roll the dice is important the first few times, to fully cement the idea of the game. After that it gets annoying. To be specific, you could probably even leave the roll time as-is, to give you that suspense, but

I was thinking about this when reading an article on HN a couple weeks ago, "LLMs Aren’t Just “Trained On the Internet” Anymore" [1] (HN discussion [2]). The thesis was that it won't matter if LLMs exhaust the available corpu

These comments always highlight a misunderstanding to me. Cookbooks (or, at least, good cookbooks) are almost always right about how long they want you to saute an onion. However, occasionally they use the word "caramelize" loosel
