Can scapy or any other util modify packets on the fly? I've always wanted an "nsed" -- to mimic the "ngrep" idea. A quick and dirty way to, for example, modify HTTP headers on the fly.

There's a unix utility called "surfraw" that does this. I don't know if it support DDG yet, but it's very cool.

I think think there's an inherent conflict in expecting those who price-shop for pennies between internet retail juggernauts like Amazon and Wal Mart and expecting these same people to pay. As a consumer, price aggregation sites like Google

Are hardware threads really that useful in any scenario? I tend to disable the functionality and use actual cores for capacity planning, especially in virtualization. Running a "make -j<cores>" generally runs faster than "make -j

If one is using tor+pgp I don't think the venue really matters all that much. I'd personally use a pastebin-like place (public or .onion, doesn't really matter) than an email server. Anyone know if there's an active NNTP network in onion

Speaking of, has a replacement for firepgp (an awesome Firefox pgp plugin from some years ago) ever cropped up? It was so idiot-proof it was beautiful, and had the project not closed down, I probably would have rallied friends and family t

Well, here's the thing with that tactic. If I wanted to organize anonymously, I'd have my co-conspirators gather on .onions sites, most likely an address run and known only by us. If anti-TOR shit gets real, then I believe we'll see non-t

Part of the US legal theory is that each viewing of the offending media is an affront to the victim(s), causing them further harm. I personally don't agree with this line of thought, as that line of thinking leads down a dark road. I think

What's this "radio" thing you speak of? I'm 40, and I haven't listened to the radio in years. My kids (14 and 17) have hardly ever utilized the radio and have no problem keeping up with pop music.

Damn, that sounds nice. I wonder if system admin/architecture can be modeled that way. I'd love to bill even a modest $2k/week, rather than trawl craigslist, responding to posts for "unix/linux ninjas" then having shops balk at anything

It puts me in control of the situation. As it is, an over-zealous prosecutor can get my ISP to comply. For personal systems, I assume that it would require an outright lawsuit/prosecution to force my hand to do anything. With competent

You beat me to the punch. That act is 26 years old, and I've never before heard about his little provision in all my reading of discussions on email privacy. Time and time again, I think, "I should bite the bullet and register a domain nam

I'm with you on the whole government intrusion thing. I haven't flown since 9/11 because all of the security BS. My career has probably taken a hit, but we all gotta take a stand somewhere.

Wow, I had no idea it was still being maintained. I though esr put that puppy to be years ago. I actually bought a print copy in the mid-90s. It was such a fun read back then. I'll need to flip through it and see what's new.

I started using the soap, brush, and DE razor about 3 years ago. A year ago, I shaved my head to start off a new job with something different. Maybe I haven't mastered the technique, but the last time I tried the DE on the head, I butcher

Anyone who manages hardware via remote console, such as Dell's iDRAC. HP and and Fujitsu have similar systems, and I imagine many more. It's a major pain in the ass, and it sucks, but it's true.

Best practice for serving .css files is gzippped? Is this at the file level or on-the-fly by the web server? In any case, why is this considered best practice? (I ask as a sysadmin, not a web developer.)

I think much of the utility of frugal living is the mindset it ingrains in you. It becomes a valuable life skill that has a much wider impact than simple finances. You gain a reflexive ability to determine the true value of a purchase, bo

It amazes me that anyone can make any money on this. For grins, I've been monitoring new .com TLD registrations for the past 2 months. On any given day, you get roughly 50k to 100k new registrations. 99% of those seem to be ad-parked (or
