I think you can check off everything on this list and still write inscrutable code. The worst code I've seen is code that was written so that only one person understands what's happening -- the author. Typically the code has too many branch

Salaries are set by CPS and go up on a schedule based on years of experience. How is that a market? Yes, she is willing to work at this salary. But we look at is as a donation to society and to our city. If we have to look at her decision t

I'm sorry, but $37,000 per year is not a great starting salary, especially for a job that plays a fundamental role in shaping and improving our society. My wife is finishing up graduate school to start teaching in poor, urban schools. Chica

Try spending some time carefully defining "eat healthy." I know plenty of people that are skinny and don't really have any discipline about what they eat which flies in the face of "fat people are just lazy." Skinny people are lazy too! I t

There is some possibility that you eat too much because you are fat. It goes something like this, (details are surely wrong, but just so you get the idea. Google gary taubes for more info): 1. Your body is expecting a certain amount of calo

So what translates the speech to text? I guess I just assumed they used software but perhaps there is a human doing this. I probably just missed when they mentioned this.

The documentary mentioned that Watson does some speech recognition. It attempts to listen to the competitor's answers so that it doesn't give a wrong answer that was already given.

Edit: Ignore this entire comment. I've been reading a different "engineering a compiler" subtitled, "vax-11 code generation and optimization". Which, as I explained is very interesting, but certainly not really for a beginner. Now I just ne

The last startup I did my cofounder did not have a job. (I still kept my job to help fund things). If I recall correctly he was able to get "oh shit, I have cancer" insurance for somewhere around $100/month. I think his deductible was $5,00

Why? No chain is a pretty nice feature. I think a lot of casual commuters would be willing to accept quite a bit of downside to get their hands on a chainless bike (that isn't a penny-farthing or a unicycle).

I wonder, as robots accomplish more and more of our daily tasks at super human speeds if we will also have to slow them down to reduce creepiness levels.

My dentist has some pretty crummy chairs in the waiting room. This certainly affects my visits to the dentist. My dentist is not in the furniture business. My dentist also has a crappy website. He is not in the software business.

I considered a maid but decided it wasn't for me. I was having a hard time finding someone I trusted to enter my house when I'm not there. Then if I did find someone, I figure the turnover for maids is pretty high so I'd be searching again

Maybe a few of these with a Roomba like strategy. Just walk around semi-randomly and clean as you go. Be able to identify non-cleanable surface like wall paper, etc. This would reduce the challenge to creating something that sticks to most

I would pay $5,000, perhaps more, to never clean my bathroom again and always have a clean bathroom. My budget is a little bigger for a hobby project. I figure $10,000 - $20,000 for me to prototype something, that's including failures, etc.

This looks like it's just a mockup/idea, but intriguing nonetheless. I thought about this approach. I wondered how well a suction system would work and it seems like a failure equals a broken robot.

What if it's not mounted in the ceiling? What about legs/tracks that move the arm to where it needs to go. I was thinking a subsystem that identifies object, e.g. "there's the toilet" or "there's the bathtub", then moves the cleaning system

I gather this is how industrial robots work? I get a robot with a clean slate and then I guide it through the first few attempts at a task, then it does the same thing over and over again by itself.

Interesting. So I would have: Toilet cleaner, tub cleaner, shower cleaner, floor cleaner, counter cleaner, mirror cleaner, etc... The big drawback to this is that's a lot of robot maintenance. The vacuum is pretty easy, I just dump the dirt
