Wow. The difference in quality between the NYT 20 years ago and today is simply astonishing. It seems that this prescient article ironically also marked the beginning of the end for the New York Times.

Does anyone else find it ironic/hilarious that YC considers customer complaints about their product to be "off topic".

This comment is the exact perception about HTTPS that we need to change. It's not the job of HTTPS to say whether a website is safe or unsafe, good or bad. HTTPS should be the default communication protocol for every website, and lets

Nice article. Shameless plug: readers that would like to use cython outside of the convenient ipython notebook interface should look into runcython [1]. You can run any python file using cython with: sudo pip install runcython mv

Nice response, Lazare. It's great to learn from people with the competence to understand the facts, and the desire to stay objective.

Uber's only UI is their app. Their app will never be optimized for renting trucks. Thus, fleetzen will have a permanent advantage here that will only increase if reinforced with an advantage in terms of the availability of drivers.

Ironically, rent control is exactly why there is so little housing available in SF. Iirc, only 30% of the voting population owns property. So how is it that the rest of us (70%) don't vote to build more? Well, because 3/4 renters

This is exactly what I came here to say. Now I don't have to. It's hard for me to continue reading an article after reading such an obvious logical error.

No, the python interpreter itself takes about 0.03 seconds to start up on an i7. Awk and sed and friends are usually about 1/10th of that. So the python interpreter startup time dominates the cost for most simple tasks. It's not e

It just vexes me that thorium research is not a national priority. How can a technology that, by many estimates, has at least a 50% chance of being a viable replacement of all energy needs over the next 1000 years not be worthy of the US in

fwiw, correlation actually is transitive if strong enough. This is obvious if corr(x,y) = 1 and corr(y,z) = 1, then corr(x,z) = 1. More generally, you can get this constraint by looking at the minimal value a for which the matrix [[1, corr(
