No one is expressing surprise. We are expressing reasons for why it needs to change.

Ya, I lost the instruction manual to my crystal ball so I hate trying to predict things like this, but I don't see any moat that the US has that will stop the world from writing the simple CRUD apps. And we regularly get 'self tau

I kind of think I said the opposite. I said the kind of thinking that works for such start ups (you must admit plenty do exist) leach into companies where such thinking does not work. In fact, I said that the world is fueled by things like

I have seen a turnaround, a dramatic one. I forget the number, but this was for something in the range of a $60MM contract. I will not identify the company or product for various reasons. How was the turnaround accomplished? By firing every

Sorry to reply to myself. This was intended as a reply to steven777400 below, not to the article itself. I guess old people can't handle these new fangled interfaces ;)

I'm sorry, do we have any evidence that young people work longer? I don't discount that it happens in certain fields, such as finance, but that is forced on them by the system. Or any evidence that age = worse code? And, can we se

I'm replying to this one only because it is on the top; I am not singling the author out in any way. This is all so foreign to me. I moved to SV 2 years ago, and I am 47. Y'all are in such a bubble. Every day the recruitment ads s

I haven't found that to be the case. We build machines, reinstall OSes, upgrade OSes; by and large wireless 'just works' in these cases with Windows. The pre-install is not a special case here.

So, your conjecture is that physics will continue, but our appetite for new features will plateau? I don't buy that, personally; in fact I think it is exactly the opposite. I want a calendar program that is smarter than me, I want sear

I don't exactly know the truth of your statements above, but I've spent my life doing all of that cool stuff. I've written code for flight computers, done machine vision for factory inspection, supported cancer research by do

Have you talked to the bigger companies? Microsoft is here, for one, and are unlikely to turn up their noses to a .NET developer. Plenty of places have dozens of recs open. Don't talk to the stupid recruiters, talk to the companies the

Not knocking your decision to live outside of SV, believe me I understand it, but on the purely economic front one thing to recognize that while housing and other expenses may eat a lot of the salary, you are contributing (or rather, can) t

My cause is my mortgage. Sorry, not picking on you specifically, but the HN meme of 'what we do is so important' is pretty tiring. My very first job, supporting cancer research, was actually probably pretty important in the scheme

I consider low rent a plus. It tells me that the owners are perhaps managing their cash flow to be maintainable, and take seriously the fact that people just handed them a heck of a lot of cash. (there is a lot of nuance I am not covering

As the other poster pointed out, this paper is measuring nothing, or at least it is not written in a way to let us know. I find it unremarkable that a sudden focus on quality and testing reduced the bug rate. It does not follow that TDD is

There are several claims on here, that I could address by replying, but I'll try to top post. I see several claims about how much better the code is with TDD. Well, can I see examples? I write tests, but I don't do TDD. By and lar

Read the literature. Kent Beck, the author of the idea and the book describing it, very clearly argues for test first. The test tells you how to design. I'm not sure if that is what you mean by your paragraph or not. But in his book, t

I've wondered about that. Take your PO to the bank, and they'll be more than accommodating in setting you up with a revolving line of credit. Why give up equity? Sometimes they do say "go away, you don't need me", b
