Or could it be that the fact that LaTeX is a layer on top of TeX is a cause of additional complexity and that you still have to deal with TeX, so the abstraction is neither complete nor opaque? I assume in Typst they don't (yet) have t

Interesting article, thanks for sharing. > Niklaus Wirth uses “discriminated union” why Pascal doesn’t have sum types. In the referenced paper (Wirth, 1975, An assessment of the programming language PASCAL, ACM), Wirth refers to the &q

Genode looks interesting. As far as I understand it uses the sel4 kernel? Is it really in development since 2008?

The CrossLine outliner ( https://github.com/rochus-keller/crossline/ ) has transclusion and backlinks as well. Very useful concept indeed.

Ecco Pro was yet another such extremely useful tool. It started as a 16 bit app in 1993 and I used the 32 bit version until about 2009 (and then implemented my own https://github.com/rochus-keller/crossline/ which

This is a great feature about the dark side of current technological developments for musicians. I was not aware of these risks and appreciate that the author has gone to great lengths to demonstrate the problems in practice.

66% of Mac users are female, around 55.7% of Mac users in 2024 are aged 18-34, macOS has a 29.62% share of the U.S., but only 15.1% of the global PC market Macs still maintain strong pedigree in graphic design and visual arts (from https:&

You can still use Gnome 2 with e.g. the Mate desktop. I use it every day and it works good enough (though it has some bugs in the file manager).

Even Mate is more usable, and to do decent work on a Mac I need a Lenovo Thinkpad external keyboard, which is much better than anything Apple has to offer and it even has a trackpoint and two mouse buttons.

I have also implemented these and other simplifications in my languages, and I don't think it makes them any less readable. Looking forward to seeing your final design.

Supporting lowercase keywords and making (at least some) semicolons optional already makes Oberon much more attractive ;-)

This design decision makes compiler implementation easier and especially enables single-pass compilation. Later Oberon versions at least supported more than one declaration section in arbitrary order, but still no in-place declarations.

Remarkable that Bill is interested in a version of Oberon-07. It's even more minimalistic than the previous Oberon versions. I spent a lot of time with the original Oberon language versions and experimented with extensions to make the

Cool, but why use Clang (and not e.g. GCC 4.7 which is written in C, supports all of Orthodox C++, and is much faster than Clang with very good compilation speed and optimization capabilities) in the first place?
