The on-off system itself was believed to be artificial in the story, which might imply that the residents were also. Speculation on top of fiction:-)

I saw one of the authors give a demo at our local user group last month. It looked useful if you have multiple projects with different JavaScript stack versions. I don’t, but that’s only because my job has Java back ends. Which are also o

True. Don’t expect me to be happy about that, though. I’ll even upvote your comment, as it does matter a little. Too bad C is what “we” settled for.

Only in the C, C++, Java, ... universe. Worked with a few case smashers in the 80s. Smashing Unicode is hard, I guess. I don’t really have much of a preference for or against case sensitivity, though I do hate fuglyCaps

That wasn’t very nice, but it felt spot on. Curly braces are the chicken nuggets and fries of computer science, lol. Within about 18 months at university (80s), I learned BASIC, FORTRAN, Pascal and Lisp. Syntax, yeah, whatever. (We transit

I wanted to like this, but I struggled with the "s-expression with numeric atoms" dependency injection notation. How do I map the numbers back to their sources?

I use the term “monomorphism”, as an antonym to polymorphism. Yeah, not good. And you meant update 3 files, not 2. You forgot the 1 file that uses the 1 implementation, which should have simply been nested the only place it was used.

I wondered that as well. 0 tolerance means our entire planet should be condemned as uninhabitable, then. Clearly there must be some level of parts per 10 to the N that is no more dangerous than a walk on the beach. 300 parts per million i

1970s? Lucky if the ceiling wasn’t coated with the stuff, in fairness. Quantities / concentrations not specified in the article that I saw at a skim. Both sides talking past the other, sadly.

Contrarian, albeit minority, view: I really like ECMAScript. It’s not a weaker Java, it’s better. I’ve been programming since the 80s. We had OOP shoved down our throats in college (CSU), with FP downplayed due to the runtime cost. Thing

Sad but true, for the obvious business reasons. I was pleased (somewhat) 20 years ago when Java displaced C++, but now I just wish it would fade away. Thanks for the garbage collector, Java, now retire. This said as someone who is convinced

C has unions, which are similar to Pascal’s variant records, though without an explicit out of band discriminant.

How would you detect something like that? A primordial black hole the mass of a small asteroid with a tiny absolute magnitude? If such a thing existed, there would likely be more than 1. How long would it take such an object to consume a

Sounds like fusion: there’s a big gap between making it happen for a moment and actually using it. ... Ignoring the HUGE gap between smashing together a few atoms so a small fraction of their bits evaporate and smashing them so hard they pr

At what mass is Hawking Radiation a significant factor? Toss something over that either hoovers up your planet, or bakes it if a near miss. Tricky to store, though.

I think Access is more like Paradox, with code and data bundled together (for better or worse), rather than numerous PRG, DBF and index files that have to be “deployed” together. Yeah, I did a lot of dBase / Clipper back in the mid 80s

I am also glad to see the new way to define event handlers. The v 2 way of defining a “methods” prototype forces me to constantly reference “this” (which will only exist later after the component has “really” been created), which I would p

You stick with your “polyfill”, I’ll stick with mine , so to speak. It’s nice to be able to make a function as concisely as something like: Const foo_finder = R.find( R.propEq( ‘prop’, ‘foo’ ) ) ... Const a_foo = foo_finder( a_list )

Look into Ramda.js if you haven’t yet. It adds partial function application / currying capabilities, as well as composition support. E.g. https://ramdajs.com/docs/#partial https://ramdajs.com/docs

Things like Ramda and jquery help avoid fighting against IE and other browser nuances, as well. Even when there seem to be native functions/ methods to do something. That’s where the monster lives.
