I have generally found tradeshows and conferences to be only marginally worth it, or a waste of time. The most recent events I felt I got my money's worth out of were the Austin Game Developer's Conference several years ago, and Defcon las

The tone of the article is not whiny. For a freelancer, or for a person doing a bootstap startup, a job that only requires one day a week is wonderful. It provides a baseline of income, hopefully a decent bit of social interaction, and one

I use IRC channels to ask arcane mysql, asterisk, and other tech questions, on the freenode channels. It's kind of hit or miss. However, a couple of times I have found good help on the #asterisk channel, and ended up talking with someone

They say that support will come for other countries by the end of the quarter. However, if you don't want to wait and see what they do, maybe you just need a partner in the US who can set up an Android Market account and pass you the money

I think you are missing some nuances of what it means to be a Slacker. It's not just about work or non-work. It's also about a kind of passive, almost anti-social way of assigning a low value to things that most of society considers impor

Having a good work ethic when you are doing useless stuff like making triplicate copies of your TPS reports is bad. Americans work more hours each week than other industrialized nations, but we have one of the lowest per-hour productivities

Without anonymity, will people post ? If they have to use a school email to post, will they be anonymous ? If you send an "account confirmation" email to the student's address, won't some idiot at the institution read it and try to use it

I agree with the disclosure rule. Look through their current reviews; do any of them mention pay, or even be vague about it, such as "we were asked to review this application" or something ? If not, then what you want to do is "pull a drea

You will have to research the law yourself, but there is a limit to how many people can invest in a business before you cross a line into "selling securities" and have to formally be a real corporation with stock. Not that you can't do it,

I signed up and contacted a seller. In spite of all the java script the site was pretty fast. I'd still get rid of it. Two points: 1) You need to get people using the site, and I have to second the observations that requiring someone to s

CL postings expire, so I don't think that is a big deal. The way to do the import is to write a program that runs on the seller's desktop, that goes out to CL and logs in and snarfs the stuff, and then has them confirm / edit one by one as

The existing user base of CL, and the chicken-and-egg problem of buyers and sellers, are definitely valid issues. However I would keep a very simple interface. There are things that I have sold on craigslist and I knew that I would get mor

The human-parseable URLs would definitely be a big improvement. "Power Users" (i.e., nerds) of CL often type in the whole URL to the city / section that they want instead of going to the main page and clicking from there.

Make a global, all-encompassing wikipedia style wiki. Except that the content will be ONLY eyewitness accounts, i.e., the sources that wikipedia complains about lacking with [citation needed]. For example, if I as a undergrad saw RMS givin

Every new facebook, myspace, webmail, etc creates another namespace. It's not necessary to have your name in all of them, and can be a bit of distraction to focus on that. I second the recommendations of gmail and twitter, although I don't
