I think it's an interesting question, but I think it will be technically difficult to differentiate between a person using data (say, with a plugin that indexes everything they browse, or a separate program that indexes their browser cache)

Could you make one with a piece of card taped to a microswitch ? You could adjust the size of the card and the angle of the microswitch until it detected if the fan was on or off.

I do web development using Ubuntu. Which linux distribution you use is really a matter of how you intend to do systems administation, as the tools for web development are pretty much the same on all the distributions.

I agree with you, but I think your terminology is inexact when you say: "The money is being absorbed by the wars and the trade deficits." Wars do not absorb money, they absorb wealth -- money is paid to make a bullet, and after the bullet i

Those mail-in rebates are bad; they depend upon a minority of people being able to successfully redeem them. They hide from the market the information that should be encapsulated in a price that reflects cost and demand. If a manufacturer'

I doubt an Adsense account has much value by it's age. I would close it. Another option would be to run it on some site, or rotate it on your current one, until it breaks $100, then cash it out and stop using it.

"or worse, the labor theory of value" What do you mean by that ? Adam Smith would say wealth is stored labor, and that seems to me as good a definition as any.

I think it is a lot more than 4 to 8. The probably have between 16 and 64 GB of RAM per machine, and if they are 512MB instances, they fill it up. So figure 32 to 128 instances per machine. Those machines may use more than 200 watts, and

It is silly to say "Has anyone checked the 20 year return on a master's of fine arts degree lately". The 20 return on a swimming class at the Y may not be that great either, but at least you learn how to swim. But MBA programs advertise th

This is a fascinating post. Some systems already have two parallel ways of looking up data built in -- an SQL backend such as MySQl and a fast key-value store cache such as memcached. Such a system might be able to be modified to treat the

No. Owning stock in a Fortune 500 company generally doesn't even give you a vote, because those are "privileged" shares, or even a share in the profits of the business (dividend). Even in the case of a smaller company, operating according
