But overall a building wall is pretty effective at shielding from that kind of noise. I’d very much prefer a quiet white noise from the racks in the above unit than someone arguing at 3am or a stupid toddler screaming. You can easily tune o

> risk of fire Is it actually riskier than a resident living in the same place? I don’t think so. A faulty mining installation would catch fire early on, and if that doesn’t occur then it’s mostly safe. A resident on the other hand would

Aren’t energy prices supposed to pay for that? In France for example, in addition to per kWh rate you also pay a subscription charge corresponding to the maximum amount of current you can draw from the grid. The miners who need more power w

I don’t know, but the main point of zoning laws is to prevent disturbances (like you can’t run a shop or a bar in a residential building for obvious noise and crowd concerns), but I don’t see why mining would be problematic. I’d rather have

If you consume more power than what the electrical company can supply your main breaker will trip. Unless those people are bypassing breakers I don’t see what’s the big deal. If the electrical company tells you that you can draw 20A and giv

This will keep going as long as people buy these devices. The only way to stop this is to hit them in their wallet.

In my case I was faxing over plain G711 through a SIP to analog phone jack converter. Not saying it’s a good idea or reliable, but it worked in my case. So the parent post could’ve very well thought he had used his modem on a real copper li

FTTC DOCSIS is what most DOCSIS users get I believe. It’s still got most of the issues of DOCSIS, mainly being a shared medium within the entire building, leading to potential congestion issues.

They do. They get revenue from inbound calls received from other carriers. It’s peanuts per-call but when you add up all the spam calls together in a year it’s still a hefty bag of cash.

I believe you can use a modem over G711... I know for sure you can send faxes over it (I’ve done it) despite it being VoIP.

Which ISPs was that with? I’ve never actually had a landline on fiber ever. It was always just standard Ethernet on top of which I run whatever I want (SIP client or WiFi calling). How was that “landline” working? Do they give you a little

React has server-side rendering so SEO is covered. However it’s still a complete waste of developer time & server resources to do this in React when a static website would be better suited for the task.

Nope, none of that in France - just a standard fibre socket, and the ISP gives you an ONT that turns it into Ethernet, which then goes into a router. I've never actually seen any ISP there even advertise a battery backup unit, I guess

Nope, that’s HFC, and while it’s radio-frequencies just like DSL, it’s a shared medium across the entire neighbourhood while DSL is dedicated.

Yeah, so it's not fibre, and should not be sold as such. Not saying HFC is bad (it's actually an awesome way of reusing a deprecated cable TV network), but it's not fibre. HFC for example is a shared medium across the entire

New builds in France don't have telephone wires for example, if an alternative is available ( real fibre) they just install that instead.

The problem is that those tools don't take into account the quality of the wire going to your house, they just quote a best-case scenario based on the wire's length, assuming a perfect wire. It does not take into account rusted, d

Not sure if that's going to change something. The main problem was never peak-time congestion (I've never experienced it personally), it's just the fact that 1) the infrastructure is shit and 2) everyone sells DSL as "fi

This already exists, it’s called “Solve Media”, a video ad disguised as a captcha where the answer is the brand’s name or slogan, embedded in the middle of the video (in a static font and position, so it completely sucks as a captcha).
