It looks to me like it has a bug - it doesn't seem correctly to factorize anything with a square factor. It also only need to loop up to sqrt(x), not x, but that's an efficiency issue. It also doesn't correctly use an early

Nice guess, but no - I know the Bloom filter, what it does, its limitations, its strengths, how it works, and how to implement it. It's one of the tools I have to hand already. But I can see how that nearly matches by description, so

No major oddities showing up: http://hnrankings.info/6971454/ I suspect there have been a couple of down votes with people just getting tired of the whole thing and wanting HN to be more about actual hacking. But most

Here's some very personal advice. This is my opinion, and others won't agree. However, for what it's worth ... I would suggest that you would benefit from learning how to ask questions. Here's a start: http:/&#x

I was half-hoping this submission would just upvote a previous conversation - I guess I'll have to go searching, but I don't have time now. Thanks for your comment - useful.

Why do sites like this deliberately break things? Even when the window has focus <SPACE> doesn't page down, breaking the way I work. Is there a reason? Or are they just out-of-touch with (some of) their readers?

I think this should be a good lesson for everyone: don't post code without testing it. There's another point here, though. It seems that you're learning PHP (although in your "About" page you claim that it's one of your skills) so there's

Why should there be any direct analog between "things" in the cell and "things" in computing? Perhaps there is no real mapping between the two that either makes sense, or is in any way useful. Not to stop you from trying to find connection

Problem with puzzles like this - if you see the answer quickly, what do you do? Any conversation fills up with uninformed, idle speculation, then someone kills it with the answer, then it's kind of all over. What would be interesting would

I know this will be of very little comfort, but having read your explanation I tested it, and it works fine for me. Maybe you really did put the wrong email address in your profile page. Did you ever test it?

Based on my experience, and measurements I've made over the years, I would say that one or both of two things happened: 1) You triggered the voting ring detection code, and/or 2) You got several downvotes. I do feel that there is a sizeable

That reminds me - I really must go back to my analysis of the coding challenge I set ages ago. I got most of the way through, but never finished. I ought to complete it. In case you're interested, it was here: http://news.ycombinator.com/

A final thought: If you don't discriminate between the actions of the vast majority, and the actions of those identified as being aligned with your desired intentions for the site, nothing will work. I can probably "prove" that. I think an

That's why I said these are "toss in the air and see what happens" ideas. They aren't expected to work, and finding fault with them is no real challenge. Mutating them into something that does work is more important, interesting and useful

As with all these things, I think the problem is complex, and has many intertwingled aspects and factors. I have many thoughts on what the problems are, but fewer on how to fix them. In part, I don't understand the mentality, so find it h
