I haven't had an issue with that personally (played on and off for almost 10 years), though I imagine it could be an issue on some older hardware. Massed units will cause lag in big team games where there's 4 armies clashing, thou

Classic AoE-playing Hacker News-types might also enjoy 0 A.D. It's free and fun, but definitely humbling if you consider yourself a master strategist: https://play0ad.com/

I only did Execute Program for a little bit and don't remember much, but the developer's Destroy All Software screencasts are what taught me how to write parsers. I must have rewatched that video 30 times while I was writing my fi

Just a few days ago I started using Keybr to learn to touch type. It frustrates me less than any other program I've used before, so far. I'm touch-typing this comment... slowly ;) I can type quickly through my own means but very i

I don't think I had a solid idea of a timeline, but I figured with a couple hours a day I could get through Fundamentals I-III in a month or two. How naive I was! 125 days in. Almost through Fundamentals II.

I'd been building a Unicode visualization tool that I think could be awesome if I pull it off right. I got stuck and paused working on it. So, currently I'm working on myself, studying Math Academy every day.

I moved to a new city with nothing but a backpack a few years ago. It was tough, and I had a lot of painful experiences, but very cool.

SQLite error messages are similarly spartan. I wrote a SQLite extension recently and didn't find it difficult to have detailed/dynamic error messages, so it may have just been a preference of the author.

I agree, that's how I feel exactly about both forums. My cleverness-on-HN remark was auto-referring to my cheeky vow-of-silence comment, which I felt proud of while writing and then a little stupid about while posting ;)

Now that I'm thinking of it, I have a lot of small habits that were once large habits. I can get up and go for a run any given day, and I might do it every day for months if I have time, or I may not. Doing 10 pushups a day is no probl

It's certainly both. The genetic component is clearest to me when I see kids grow up in the same household and have differing levels of patience and impulse control from a young age. Then, people tend to become less impulsive as they a

I don't find I effectively build small habits. I tried doing 10 pushups a day and failed, but then I started going to the gym and that full-on, hours of effort keeps me motivated and wanting to go. I'm not great at half-assing two

Somewhat related, I've seen a similar equation for motivation: E*V M = --- I*D Motivation = (Expectancy * Value) / (Impulsiveness * Delay) Which comes from "The Procrastination Equation" by Piers

PICO-8 [1] might be a good choice. I always consider that kids want their friends to try their games, and so being able to easily distribute to the web is awesome. They can link their game from the site [2], or with some parental help they

Scratch is not conducive to complex (traditional) projects, which I think is sort of the appeal for seasoned programmers. For my part, I woke up one weekend knowing I had to make a recursive bisection demo in it [1]. The effort I knew it wo
