I think he has taken this a little too far. I don't see Yahoo destroying their market value with this 'test', they are just trying to stave off MS. I've actually switched to Yahoo search in the last 3 months and find it better than Google,

I'll be the first to admit it might just be me ;) I prefer XML and haven't used JSON extensively enough to be proficient with it. If there are pluses to using JSON over XML I'm ignorant to them.

I think that's a great viewpoint to take however if you're going to now sell bloggers on this idea you need to also share their viewpoint on the product.

I recently built a crawler of my own in Ruby after trying, and ultimately deciding against, Nutch. Depending on what you want to do with your crawl there is a very good change that you'll be able to write a small crawler that is much easier
