It's good and fast but lacks some features (like find) that Calibre's reader has.

Microsoft already does this in Windows 8, 10 and 11 with their "telemetry" servers. The DNS queries for these bypass any of your own DNS settings. They even bypass host file overrides.

So can it compile to native machine code as an executable file, link in all the needed libraries and just run as-is now? Or does it need a huge amount of supporting .NET libraries included also installed on the target?

Yeah, it's good, but the author forgets to mention some other bad chips from before the late 1990's - The Intel i432 - too far ahead of its time, in Itanium for the 1980's. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/

Yes, and the price of Pi's is now very high due to a shortage. A Pi 4 costs more than a second-hand tiny i5-4700 series with SSD and 8GB of RAM. Still the Pi has GPIO and PLLs which Intel-based boards don't have.

The reality is that most organisations choose Microsoft server products for legacy reasons. They aren't that good for their eye-watering cost. If they were to start from scratch, they'd go Linux or cloud.
