You can send a message to any phone yet you don't see SMS spam. I definitely get SMS spam. I think part of the profit model on SMS spam is that they are high-cost, opt-in messages (that you didn't sign up for). The senders are using a r

In the field I trained for, a PhD's median salary is only about 6% higher than someone with a master's. On the other hand, the spread of salaries for PhD's is much larger, mostly due to the amazingly unfounded assumption that a PhD somehow

To answer your question, with my current config (Ubuntu Eee 8.04) standard def plays fine. HD from sites like vimeo definitely stutters. Youtube does some sort of resolution detection and always gives a "this video has been removed" error

My Eee PC 701 outputs at full 1360 x 768 on my 720p LCD TV. I can't imagine this tablet having less "power" than the Eee PC 701. On the other hand, I would be a little surprised if the final version did have VGA out.

I just had my mother-in-law pick up some Blundstones for me in Melbourne for about 63 USD, whereas if I want to order them in the US they're at least 145 USD. So I vote for #2 as well :)

I think there is also an incredible amount of competition for the junior faculty positions as well. One of my friends, who recently started a physics post-doc at Caltech is convinced that he will have to eventually go into the private sect

No. Science is the study of the natural world and his argument that CS meets this requirement fails. Think about mathematics. Just because mathematicians are interested in, say, calculus, and calculus can be used to model physical phenome

Maybe you should try working on some open source projects and or your own projects while working in a shared space with other programmers, allowing you to bounce ideas off them. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coworking

The key to a friendship is to be useful to the other person. Always pay more attention to them than you do to yourself. Figure out things they like/need but don't have, and buy gifts for them. So have you actually met any people yet? Thi

Well, the grad students come cheap (at least a lot cheaper than a robot), and they often don't have many choices of who to work for. Mostly they are expected to work 24/7 without complaining for very little pay... It's very fun :)
