What I love about Hacker News is that a person can be convicted of a crime, die while still convicted of that crime, but then have the conviction thrown out after they have left this mortal plane and someone will still be like "U

So $2.5 million isn't nothing (not by a long shot), but 'scot-free' is probably not a fair characterization, especially considering she has a conservator monitoring all her purchases now (to make sure she's not hiding

Ok apples to apples, Ken Lay was 3 years post-Enron-bankruptcy.

Be careful directly comparing Madoff to SBF. Madoff admitted his crimes (hat's why it was so speedy). SBF is more like Ken Lay, and that took 3 years for the Feds to build their (ultimately successful) case.

Madoff admitted to his crimes so it was easy to arrest him right away. Ken Lay, who did not admit to crimes, took 3 years to be indicted and then was convicted.

It seems like everyone just ignores their ability to use the Internet in cases like this. Enron (a pretty good analogue since the same CEO is liquidation FTX) went under in 2001 and Ken Lay was indicted in 2004. Madoff only went to jail r

I’m not sure I’m tracking what you’re getting at. International Style had its biggest impact in the US on NYC and just look down park ave to see those buildings getting torn down. Union Carbide being a great example. And the brutalism point

Yea? Either commit and say “scanning for CSAM is the top priority” and scan on device or say “privacy is the top priority” and don’t scan at all. I’m literally saying this halfway path is the worst of both worlds, since people still lose

What’s always so interesting about this then is what’s the point? Apple catches the least sophisticated of criminals who don’t know how to turn off iCloud (likely the least harmful nodes in this network of horror)? And to accomplish that al

You are wholly incorrect. Needs are a hierarchy and the impacts along that hierarchy are non-linear. The billionaire may complain more and often do.

I really implore you to seek out the articles where people promoting modernism used nearly identical language to you when describing Victorian buildings. It’s hard to see the air when it’s the environment we’ve lived in our entire lives. h

I won’t get into the debate of if it’s possible to have an objective “good” or “bad” but when it comes to architecture that is almost always subjective.

You’re not really aware of the history of city, huh? The neighborhoods with Victorians were either torn down or became low income in the 1950s (ever wonder why hippies flocked to Haight Ashbury?)

Here’s the secret to this thread. Every “adult” generation always hates 50-100 year old architecture, because that was what was slightly old and starting to show its age when they were kids. Gen-X/Millenials associate brutalism with no

If you think this is a sign that plaid is anywhere near their last valuation of $13bn, then I have news for you. The real problem is inequality. Zach is facing consequences, but the drop from $1bn to $100mn (a 10x decline in wealth) is s

Please answer my question directly. Is it 'subjective' that many activities are segregated by gender in the West? If a person doesn't like that, how is it not a logical response to try to change their gender?

So you're telling me that a boy who identifies as a boy is fine to change with the girls at PE and do their activities? OR is there 'baggage' to being a boy in this scenario?
