If you've already got a VPN solution your happy with, Tailscale probably adds very little value for you. It's just basically the easiest / most user friendly way to setup a VPN to your home network. It can do way more than ju

Over time, I've taken less and less stuff. I still take my iPad in a keyboard case for longer trips, and as a backup for 2FA incase something happens to my phone, but now I mostly feel like my phone alone is "good enough." Do

It's a wrapper around Wireguard that lets you use common SSO providers (Apple ID, Google, etc) to manage access. It also handles looking up the IP address of your "nodes" through their servers, so you don't need to host

Fair enough, I get the TV for kids thing. For me, I can't remember the last time I used a hotel TV. When I travel, I want to do stuff at the place I'm visiting, the hotel room is just a place to sleep and shower. If I do want to w

I did 82 days last year. Everyone travels different, but for me I feel like any time I spend watching TV in the hotel is wasted time - I'm in a whole other city, surely there's something I can do? The hotel is just somewhere to ta

I used to use a NUC with a K400 as well (and a Logitech Harmony (RIP)), and the Apple TV is a way better experience. The Apple TV remote is way more useable, and HDMI CEC just works™, which never ever was true with the NUC. I really like th

When I travel, I like carrying as little as possible. These comments are fascinating to me, people are brining more devices than I have in my whole house and needing to make a LAN for them. Personally I just connect my phone to WiFi and the

Power management is a really hard problem. It's the stickiest of programming problems, a multi-threaded sequence where timing matters across threads (sometimes down to the ns). I'm convinced only devices that have hardware and sof

I have a strong desire not to self host the “live” copy of anything. If my server goes down, I don’t want to have to drop everything and fix it (e.x. if I’m on vacation, I don’t want to have to take a laptop incase I need to fix any server

I feel like some day, YouTube and all video streaming are likely to move to apps and just drop browser support (replace with redirect to app). It feels like the logical conclusion of the ad blocking arms race. This is just one step forward

Not surprising. For what it cost you could get a Model Y and a gently used gas truck. Running your house off it in a power outage was a super cool idea, but man that price.

I’d like to take a swipe at this Rust has no_std to handle not having an allocator. Tons of things end up being marked “unsafe” in systems/embedded Rust. The idea is you sandbox the unsafeness. Libraries like zero copy are a good examp

Yeah this lines up with my experience. Had issues with mesh (I bought an AP with mesh in the product name that covered a wall outlet, no Ethernet in)(edit: it was the “beacon”), essentially was told “you’re holding it wrong.”, and moved on.
