Agreed, with regard to the quote about Montessori, Papert and Bruner, I don't have the necessary background knowledge to truly evaluate the statement. The terms "pedagogy", "psychology" and "mathematics" a

What a bunch of of vague, hand-wavey nonsense (the article, not necessarily the HARC lab, I couldn't make heads or tails of what they actually do). Covers up its lack of clear thinking with an attempt to sound profound and obfuscatory

Agreed, ideas create culture - I guess I've found personally that respectful discussion with those of opposing viewpoints is more productive than 'fighting' them or shutting them down entirely, which flagging kinda seems like

So the mere idea of avoiding drinking, or that different people will react to an event in different ways is so dangerous and empowering to potential abusers that the entire HN readership needs to be protected from seeing it? Are we adults h

The mass flagging / censoring of comments people disagree with below seems a little petty, I'm curious what the original posts are. I'd rather hear a dumb opinion and make my own choice.

Good article - at first I was wary because of vagueness in the first few paragraphs, terms like "inappropriateness", "sexual harassment", "non-consensual sexual advances" etc. that are flung around so freely no

It would be interesting to do a study, for a busy site with a big enough sample size, counting ad clicks locally and then comparing with Google's reports. I imagine you could attach your own javascript events etc. to do your own compar

Apparently the PP module here overcomes the GIL limitations, so I'm assuming you'd see a typical multithreading perf increase with it. Haven't tested it myself though.

Most fellow python people know this already, but native compiled C/C++ code generally runs about 100x faster than interpreted CPython code for any kind of number crunching or computation. So like sonium also mentioned, definitely consi

I definitely hate ads like anyone, but it should be acknowledged that ads serve a purpose too, of creating an economy for free content and giving people an avenue to get some income in exchange for their efforts, and possibly be able to dev

So should we all browse through a Tor relay when we're looking at cat pictures? Maybe a new protocol can be invented that allows websites to force us to use one? I tend to dislike these dogmatic rules - you have to be aware of the part

Am I the only one not all-in about moving everything to HTTPS? It's great for sites that track personal information and sensitive data that you wouldn't want snooped. But for a lot of sites (like phrasegenerator.com, one of mine)

That's good perspective. My lens on it has mostly been stuff like SICP, Paul Graham's old essays, periodic Lisp HN posts etc. Good to hear there's a community out there that's fine with the messy practical stuff.

It's interesting, I'm reading Black Swan at the moment by Nassim Taleb, and one of his big rants is about how we get blinded by idealized, platonic forms and ideas when the real world is messy and inherently unpredictable. E.g. tr

Wanted to second the ambivalence around the CLRS Intro to Algorithms book - having learned a few algorithms by poring through its chapters, I can definitely say it's a long, out-of-the-way route to take for a practicing programmer. I m

I've personally stopped using const in my C and C++ code, except for actually defining constants (in the #define sense). The headaches and complexity it introduces don't seem worth the benefit - you inevitably have to remove the c
