Free speech isn't free if there are stipulations. I'm not saying Amazon should have to let you host whatever you want on their servers, just that if you can't host controversial speech there, you can't rightly say you have freedom of speech

Karma observations: if you reply in the early morning, before everyone gets up and reads HN, you'll get more karma than if you reply in the middle of the night when no-one will see it. Same goes for replying to threads that don't have many

You can have that one free. Go find yourself a contractor on Elance for a couple hundred dollars, and in a few days, you too can be on the road to infinite wealth.

Repeating what you said above, and contributing "I knew I would get downvoted for this" don't really belong on HN either. In fact they're probably worse. Heh.

Reddit puts a random new link at the top of the page. To get votes, it has to be visible, to be visible it has to be on the front page. It's just a question of layout and maybe simple filtering based on karma or account age or whatever. Cou

If it was a real check, legally, then the bank should've been able to collect from the get-rich-quick company. So if he had kept the "bank's" money, wouldn't he really have been keeping the spammer's money, being that the bank would just ha

Perhaps we find the writing valueless, ergo, the tip jar is obnoxious. What's less noble, keeping the bank's money, or asking for some of ours?

The problem is that as we allow more non-topical articles to be voted to the top of HN, we lose cohesion. You can go anywhere for Wikileaks news, and as iuguy has pointed out, reddit is probably one of the best/easiest places to find such n
