It really seems like a double gut-punch from my perspective. I was approached by a recruiter representing EFF when I graduated (state school in the midwest) and while 75K for a fresh grad seemed like reasonable compensation for a non-profit

Why is it that nonprofit tech organizations see such value in maintaining a San Francisco office location (looking at you Mozilla and EFF) only to lowball employees on compensation? Surely the perception of having a trendy location can'

This only indicates that the hole was made from one side or the other-- we can't say for sure that just because the hole was drilled from the inside that it was done in orbit.

In theory yes, the algorithm could be changed or even moved away from proof of work and towards proof of stake (I think ETH is doing this?) In practice bitcoin is somewhat resistant to large changes or forks, most anyone who would consider

This seems less like they turned copper into gold and more that they found a way to process copper so that it can replace gold in some industrial applications. I suppose that title wouldn't climb the frontpage as quickly.

Sure there is a royalty on some of the key parts of receiver hardware and software, but if you think that even comes close to the cost of the whole system you are in for a rude awakening. Those royalties won't have even paid for the o

Civilian use is wide yes, but this is only because it is provided for free by DoD. None of those uses would be economically viable if they had to bear the costs of developing, launching and maintaining the system. Keeping track of the boats

GPS is lofted and maintained by the DoD. It's primary purpose is military. It would not exist as a free service without DoD's investment. Other satellite constellations with far fewer sats cost considerable amounts of money to us

The numbers are listed as compensation, not base salary. I assume these are "all up" numbers including stock and bonus. 400k base seems steep, even for an L5 at Google or Netflix.

You do see the irony in shouting down my characterization and then shamelessly exemplifying it don't you? A vesting schedule is someone feeding you your equity back to you over time. Pure and simple. Of course it's easy to see why

I don't think the alibaba shops have much interest in doing the legwork to list their own items on Amazon. They rely on other people (like the author) to do the research and marketing legwork, and hold the bag for unsold goods. They ar

Throttle based on what? IP address? This works for domestic IT departments looking to shut out automated attempts from specific ranges but at Google's scale IP based filtering could end up shutting out an entire country.
