I'm currently doing a CS masters and I did my undergrad in Physics. I'm really glad that I have the background in mathematics and stats that I have. In our physics classes they really drilled into us that although our theory and homework

I think we programmers become so used to thinking about things abstractly that we forget the metaphors we were using when we first learned to program. When I write C I'm often thinking about how the operation changes memory locations and r

I could understand an argument that knowledge of certain languages is correlated with being a Good Programmer. This guy seems to have heard about the cool tools of the day, jumped in, and failed mostly due to a lack of experience. One great

I think he only reason it's still in there at the end is just so the site doesn't have to be rewritten. He's just changing the hardware to something beefier instead of optimizing it. It's sad that rails, by default though it may not be the

That would be ideal, but increasingly that is encrypted and DRMed as well, which further has limits on what you can do with it. It's no longer enough to decode the video once and pass it around the house. Now they want a fully encrypted p

I think their strongest conversion point would be getting rid of adds. If I realized that a few of the sites I visit almost daily and get linked to me regularly would all magically have no adds if I signed up for a service, I might do it.

I think a good middle ground, and a good practice in general, would be to state your assumptions and make sure you recognize them as such. When you know what your assumptions about a problem are then it quickly becomes clear what questions

I have to agree with the passive-aggressive mentality being common. I think all the nervousness surrounding interviews shows how adversarial they are. For how aggressive some interviewers are, I believe half of that aggression comes from t

When I started developing in C in Vim there are two things I've gotten used to that I can't live without now: ctags and auto-complete (they help with eachother). Ctags is great, especially for navigating someone else's code. What does this

Do it every chance you get! It's just that you can't always program with a fun functional language. The hardest part is in collaboration with people who have been using C for 10+ years and aren't interested in other things. Fortunately we

I meant "not necessarily to program in". E.g. it's not going to be something you use all the time. The sad fact is that a lot of existing code and companies use fairly safe languages like C and Java, but simply knowing how to think about f

I can definitely say that Klingon isn't a language you can just jump into. Er... I mean Haskell. However, being the first functional language I'm really starting to grok I'm amazed at how powerful and concise it is. Wasn't it Eric S. Raymo

Yup. The farther you progress in the game the more XP/hour you get generally. Also, each expansion has had a notable increase in the XP/hour available in the areas and levels it introduces. In almost any RPG you will get more experience
