I wouldn't call that a pure CSS font, as it's just a Base64 encoded WOFF font embedded in CSS as a data URI. It can save you for that extra HTTP request, though, if you only need to support modern browsers which support WOFF fonts

Yes, you can. I've successfully done so in a Backbone/React app. The _.chain() method furthermore gives a nice functional style ways of building lists which is useful when building UI in React, like so: var list = _.chain([1

I'd say it's easier. You don't have to worry about backports to get packages of newer date or expired PGP keys when updating an old machine or anything like that.
