The RealWorld hack in GHC is not "passing the world state". It's just a hack/implementation detail to get evaluation order correctly. The RealWorld -> (RealWorld, x) view of IO is not a valid one.

> There's nothing you can't do. There are plenty of effects IO (the ambient monad of most languages) doesn't support: You can't do ListT fork effects. You can't do ContT effects (coroutines are not as powerful as ContT). You can't have

Their incentive is getting even more money, so they can buy more than food and shelter. Also, self fulfillment. Throwing around words like "Communism" is not productive. It would be better if you only mentioned specific negative aspects.

Twitter's data is all in memory. That memory may not be random-access memory, though. A pet peeve of mine is how people can do all the CS necessary to get nice data structures for their in-RAM data, but seem to forget everything they know

It is not inevitable that if your significant other deals drugs you will do drugs. Some would say that unless coercion of any kind was used, the user is fully responsible for their own actions.

I'll take a sloppily named Haskell codebase over a well-named Python codebase, especially when reliability is compared. Type-safety of the Java kind might be overrated. Type-safety of the Haskell kind, though is hard to over-rate. It catche

Imperative code looks like imperative code. Most Haskell code isn't though. Also, a 5 layer transformer stack is typically wrapped in a newtype, so it looks like an ordinary monad with the operations you need.

Static languages like Haskell are the best of both worlds. You develop with roughly the same speed as dynamic languages, but then you get the performance and maintainability of static languages.

Alternatively, you could implement Maybe in Java safely using the visitor pattern. Cumbersome, but it can work.

This kind of proof is often named "proof by lack of imagination". You're reiterating the design ideas of the condom with a bit of expansion, asserting that it must be this way. But you really don't know if you've explored the entire design-

I find some of Google Now's features pretty awesome, perhaps creepily so. I get an email with someone's itinerary, and on the days of his flights, Now shows me all the up-to-date flight schedules. I look up how long it'd take to get somewhe

So Haskell makes IO harder by making you learn which modules use lazy I/O and avoid them? I can agree with that. But I don't think that's what people generally try to say when they claim IO in Haskell is hard or bad. People think the IO/eff
