After the tablet fiasco in 2015 they've never been able to afford to staff their OS properly; the web browser engine still lags behind Firefox by a long way (using Gecko 91 currently).

The scenarios were calculated based on hypothetical 'policies' of a society and the availability of natural resources. The scenario (from the 2004 book) we are tracking most closely is no.2, i.e 'business as usual' but w

LibreOffice is ok for reading and making minor changes to existing files but I haven't used Writer or Calc for anything new in years. LaTeX and Gnumeric are my tools of choice.

The Transcend consumer cards are/were generally 'hybrids' - they would work in IDE mode if connected to such an interface.

The reality is that since the invention of ICs, electronic devices have become 'black-boxes' that the vast majority of people can't hope to understand the entire workings of. Free software licenses were never going to change

Be careful not to mix local customs and Sharia, very often they don't line up in Muslim-majority countries.

This is trying to fill the gap between console Unicode editors (e.g mined) and the 'full-fat' editors typically built around GTK or Qt. I'm not too keen they decided to mess around with the Motif File selection dialog to make

Nothing older than Nehalem and Bulldozer got microcode mitigations for Spectre, so I'd say running a C2D online would be a liability by now.

My point is that small button GUIs should be a choice for the people who want to put up with them, not something that's pushed for universal use.

They may not personally choose Devuan or GNOME but they might end up using them because an administrator chose them.

I suppose 'power-users' can put up with 'small-button' GUIs but I do think a general purpose GUI needs to be easy to use for people who aren't used to controlling mice and keyboards all the time.

I don't like GNOME's engineering or license, but as far as the UI and design are concerned I don't think anyone has topped it (minus the hot corner I guess).

At least some of them were people trying to hack X.Org to deliver an 'iPhone-like' experience on Nokia Maemo/MeeGo devices. The Jolla phone ended up being the first consumer device to ship with Wayland afaik.

Pretty much all CPUs from Bulldozer and Sandy Bridge onwards got microcode mitigations through 2018 and 2019. Just about everything older is definitely obsolete from an efficiency standpoint.

So Metal and DirectX 12 capable GPUs are already hard requirements for their respective platforms, and I anticipate that Wayland compositors will start depending on Vulkan eventually. That will make pre-Broadwell laptops generally obsolete

I discovered recently that a Raspberry Pi 5 would be faster than both my sister's and parents' PCs. Just a shame that all cheap ARM boards need proprietary kernels.
