Note that the UK's new high speed rail (HS2) is budgeted at £33bn ($51bn) and likely to exceed that[0]. Being mostly straight, and across land already approved for rail use, it seems like an ideal candidate for a hyperloop alternative.

Thanks–I think it was the fact that the pylons could presumably be scaled that was making the sentence difficult to parse (I wasn't sure how they were meant to prevent access). That, and that the pylons themselves are also presumably &

Reading the entire PDF is highly recommended; it contains a surprising amount of answers already (including many to comments below). I think, if anything, safety aspects haven't been sufficiently explored in the pdf. I'm quite hap

Tragedy of the commons – I know my individual purchases are a drop in the ocean to Amazon, and hence any boycott I make would be worthless, so why should I pass up some good deals even if (hypothetically speaking) I did disapprove of the co

It'd be nice if there was support for multiple versions of characters and ligature support. But still, pretty damn cool. Edit: Seems like they have a new version of the tool on PaintFont.com which does have support for ligatures! Edit2

It depends what you mean by "full MD" too. That term can cover a multitude of sins. Truly accurate MD would be even more computationally expensive.

One suggestion is to reduce the influx of new users. Maybe keep new registrations closed except for a few days every month or so. It allows older users time to help the new users adjust to the community, and prevents opportunistic/anon

As long as they don't hold onto your passwords too, then it's not too bad right? A compromise for the sake of convenience, to be sure, but even in the worst case – if all Authy tokens are compromised – people still shouldn't

Right – but reflectors at the base of your cell still help. Any photons that pass through the first time, not being absorbed, are reflected back, effectively increasing the path length of your photon in the material.

Indeed; I believe they currently do that in some solar cells. I personal favourite are "distributed Bragg reflectors" – they're mirrors, but don't work in the traditional sense: http://en.wikipedia.org/wi

Any recommended CAs for S/MIME for personal users? And is it possibly to transparently use both, e.g. sign all outgoing mail with S/MIME by default, but also encrypt with, say, GPG if you happen to have that contact's public

If you mean encrypted data storage on the server, you're better off just storing all its files in an encrypted volume using something tried and tested like dm-crypt rather than having to trust ownCloud to get it right.

I tried ownCloud recently on a Raspberry Pi and found it dog slow. I'm not sure if I just found it at a bad time, or if it requires some more serious hardware, but it wasn't usable for me personally.

This looks cool, but of course you can also use encfs directly with Dropbox or, if you prefer a graphical interface, Boxcryptor[1] have a fork of encfs specifically for cloud storage along with some platform-specific apps. [1] https:/

I actually find lame edit wars kinda heartening. It suggests that the people running wikipedia have principles regardless of the topic; that it doesn't matter if it's silly; that if you want to talk about it, it should be done r
