For context, BC, Washington, Oregon, and California have all passed state bills to move to permanent DST but need Federal approval per U.S. law. In short, they did get approval from the time zone who will be first to make the change, and th

More importantly, you can buy a new Intel chip to replace the one that failed, swap them out, and go about your day. Thinking about the gap between the lifecycle experience on the PC side vs. the Mac side is a good way to understand the d

Lots of open ended questions here that I'm not sure how to interpret the motivation for... How long should a company like GM that designs its own engines have to continue manufacturing replacement ones? That's not cheap... (etc.)

Apple has explicitly made replacement parts non-user-servicable at this point. It's called "serialization" and prevents even OEM parts (like a screen from a different iPhone) from being recognized by the phone. [1] This is th

I understand this thread is about "repairability" of different product designs, and there are definitely arguments on both sides of that issue that are valid... I just want to make sure you're not confusing "repairabilit

I don't think this argument is related whether or not people should be able to source and repair the devices they own. R2R doesn't require redesign of products - only that parts and documentation should be made available so indie

You're basically arguing for IP protection via obscurity/complexity, but I assure you that anyone who wants to clone tech products at industrial scale can already do so today. This just gives repair documentation and parts availab

All I'm saying is that R2R in no way changes the products that are available to you if you want product-as-a-service. You can still take your phone to the Genius Bar or lease it from a carrier. It just guarantees that there are also op

Important distinction here! Right to repair does not prescribe design considerations! You can glue/solder/integrate all you want! Just need to make sure replacement parts are available and documentation is clear!

Your approach will always be a valid choice, for those who want it, and companies will be happy to provide that device-as-a-service model. R2R is just seeking to preserve the practical access to repairability for those who want to service t

I'd normally be cynical too, but MA just passed right to repair for automotive, despite 8-figure lobbying by the automakers... The auto one passed 75% in favor. If the citizens want it, even Apple can't stop it.

For context, in case folks aren't familiar with how this works, a single state passing right-to-repair forces companies to change the way they operate nationally/internationally... If Massachusetts (where Rossmann hopes to get on

You'd be surprised, I think, just how much can be fixed by indie shops still... Louis Rossmann [1] is pretty well-known around here since he documents everything, but if you watch, he's replacing capacitors that are fractions of t

The French repair score system mentioned by OP gave the latest Macbook 16" a repair-ability score of 7/10. This unfortunately makes the French approach pretty much useless.

I wish this was helpful, but amiunique.org calls out the values for canvas, fonts, etc. as unique when running the blockers. Maybe this is because it's randomizing every time, but it makes the amiunique test pretty flawed...
