Just for tests and stuff, but I specifically remember memorizing tree rotations and the like. I've forgotten all of them by now :)

Oh god, that algorithms book. Flashbacks to college memorizing red-black trees coming to me.

Yeah...it's kind of a bummer. Would be nice to see if any of the people I follow on Twitter are on Peach as well.

Yup. I don't even have that large a salary for a software engineer ($75k in Portland OR, which is plenty for a 26 y/o, kidless, single male), but I'd take half if it meant I wouldn't be as chained to the desk as I am no

I bought my first Goosebumps books at my local B. Dalton. I have no idea why they closed it...I felt like it was the perfect size. Or maybe that's just nostalgia talking.

I spend a lot of time in Michigan as my company is based in Grand Rapids. It's almost like East and West Germany at times with how much better off Western Michigan is.

Indeed it is the standard, but I'm pretty sure I have a permanent twitch in the corner of my eye from my university compilers course and that book. It's probably not something I could ever do for fun, but it's extremely impo

I've always thought this was the case. I quit a job last year, and a large part of it was the 8:30 AM standups where our CTO would stress us out with customer woes and deadlines not entirely relevant to the current sprint. Instead of

Same here in Portland. The companies I've been involved with here tend to take pride in their employees being active. I could see this changing as the Valley types continue to move in, however.

This looks like it was so much fun to do. One of these days I hope inspiration strikes me out of thin air to do something similar.

In general I agree, but my own experiences (mostly with FreeRADIUS) show that sometimes a very "direct" maintainer can scare away most of the nagging riff-raff that this article describes. An inclusive community is great, but it

I have a strong fear of flying, which is unfortunate since I have to fly to my company's HQ once a month or so. One of my coping mechanisms is that, at worst, my death would be swift and with enough luck, painless. Above all else, it

You're getting downvoted but you're not far from the truth. I fail to see how ESPN couldn't just charge the consumer more than they charge the cable companies, but hand out their channels ala cart and show more sports.

This, exactly. I could find an orthonormal basis or an eigenvector, but I never quite wrapped my head around their importance, especially visually.

It does, if I remember correctly (I used to obsessively read about airliners but haven't in a while). Rear-mounted engines require specialized equipment to gain access, so you see them less on larger, newer aircraft. Same for the win

But all three of those restaurants are chains all throughout Texas now. They all may have started there, but Austin is just flat out not weird anymore IMO.

After spending a couple of years in Austin, I always felt it had a veneer of "cool" that was mostly fake. It's cool because people say it is; it's really not a liberal oasis in a sea of conservatism, it just seems like

Masters of Doom does a good job detailing his logic in refusing to leave north Texas. Cheap cost-of-living and warm climate were his original reasons IIRC. Even though he could live wherever he wants, he's still extremely practical.

I imagine some fascinating papers will come out soon from people who will do the math/simulations to hone in on a tighter search area than what the Inmersat data has given us.

This is why it got so messy when they got rid of FPH. They did a MISERABLE job of defining the line on what is and is not appropriate. If you're going to censor, it better be a well-defined line.

Hopefully we get back to the "normal" Summer in Oregon relatively soon (not looking likely thanks to the Blob/El Nino). Living in Portland without an AC this Summer has been terrible.

This definitely stirred up some of the dust in my head that has settled since I took Algorithms in college. Specifically, I forgot about how different the world would be if P is actually NP. It's interesting to think about, kind of i

This exact reason is why EverQuest grabbed me so much harder than any other MMO since. Another huge reason is the danger factor. In WoW, there is effectively no punishment at all if you die, so there's no fear of exploring new places

I lived near Austin my whole life and just assumed traffic was that bad everywhere...after I relocated to Portland, I realized how truly miserable driving anywhere in Austin actually is.

Having moved to Portland from Austin for work, I expected weeks of delicious cloudy misery, but it's been more-or-less in line with the winters I had in Texas. The locals are visibly annoyed, as am I; I wanted to see some snow for onc

That was an absolutely terrifying read. What seems to make Ebola worse is the manner in which you die...bleeding out on the floor, alone. Doctors Without Borders is an incredible organization, and one that I gladly donate to yearly.
