That turns out to be one of the central questions of Micro Economics. If the demand is elastic, they would have sold more than 10 times the amount and would net a profit by decreasing the price. If the demand is inelastic they would have

Well stated. I am of a similar opinion and just submitted a similar meta discussion: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1254135 . I would really like to see this calm down so we can get some interesting news and rational discourse going

I'm trying out iAnnotate right now. So far it has worked pretty well. I tried loading one into pages and it didn't recognize it. I'll see if iBooks can do it as well. *edit: it doesn't look like you can load PDF files into iBooks

My iPad has been running for the last 5 hours. Some videos for my boy, some khan academy for me, syncing books from amazon, loading PDFs for school, browsing the web. My battery is down to 68%. It was at 85% when I pulled it out of the box

This is the type of article that really gets my adrenaline pumping. I find it so frustrating to read about these types of things, although the frustration for me is in the fact that people take one person and vastly over generalize to an e

I agree, I don't think it's the panacea for that problem. It's a start though. The toughest things to get over imo, are the meme's that people will never use math and/or that math is not useful in the real world. The KhanAcademy handles

For most people, they come out of high school not just poor at math, they come out "Math Broken" as one of my friends puts it. The second you mention anything to do with Math, their eyes glaze over and their brain completely disengages. I

I tried to make it clear in my previous post that I'm not passing judgment on your choice of living on your money, however your response seems to indicate that you are upset. If I have offended you, I apologize, that was not my intention.

One of my favorite quotes comes from the movie Quiz Show, where Charles Van Doren says "You'll forgive me, but anyone who thinks money is ever "just money" couldn't have much of it." I agree with the gist of that statement but in a more ge

As others have noted, this is not "non-reversible", at least in the current incarnation. Part of the problem is that if you type an 'a' you always get the same three color triplet. It seems to me that the simplest fix would be to add somet

Because B-Tree indexes perform orders of magnitude better on smaller lookup values, like say an integer, than they do on large (and even worse variable length) strings. There are a number of factors that contribute to this, but two big one

I've done the same, and I agree with your post entirely. There are a few tricks to making nested sets perform reasonably well on large data sets. I've tested this model on trees that contain up to 100 million items within the scope of a si

Materialized path is a good tool for trees that won't be deeply nested, and for tables that won't grow particularly large. However, because the path is stored in a string, read operations are not particularly efficient. It's a good tool t
