The parent-report thing is definitely problematic here. Parents will never say "my child is bad at everything", and will often avoid saysing "my child is good at everything", especially if they have other kids. So they w

I agree that these things get ugly very quickly. Another thing is that you aren't always catching all exceptions; for example, sometimes you are sure that something is in bounds, but the function is still declared as throws(out_of_rang

Complete breaking is never going to happen. What can be done is adding compiler switches which enforce some kind of "strict" or "modern" mode. Something close to "-Wall -Werror", but with errors explicitly for

You also tend to overlook/ignore the "if err != nil" in every other line, which Google seems to push. There is really no silver bullet for error handling, and sometimes you need more than one approach. However, I think except

If you use C++, you should really be using a separate type for this, rather then rely on variable names. The compiler is much better at catching these things than you are.

Thanks. I was hoping for the "Go" response, but since I'm working with Torch I'm genuinely interested as well.

It is. The page starts with talk about namespaces and such, so one thinks this will be about some cool new features of C++11, but instead ends with a global #define. Yes, coding like this is evil and will eat your hamster. For example, tryi

The real question here is: what difference does it make? The person in the room is useful for the people outside. I like the Dijkstra quote here: "The question of whether machines can think is about as relevant as the question of wheth

I would think that task switching and interrupts are much slower than actual processor instructions. So there is no reason for compilers to use it.

There is no mention of the fact that the STL implementation is very generic, it only assumes operator++ and operator* on the iteration, and operator< on the value. The "optimized" versions here all make more assumptions on the

There is a missed opportunity in the tagline. Instead of "More space to explore" it should have said "More space for Activities". Because, you know, the Activity class.

The article states that China's problem is too many little farms, and that farmers can't consolidate because the land is owned by the government. It even goes as far as suggesting that private ownership of the land would help get

Testing for 5000 devices isn't much different from testing for 8 devices. At some point you stop writing and testing for every configuration separately, and start grouping them, pretty much as you describe with one code and 3-5 sets of

People are irrational beings, and so are customers. We will rather buy something that's on sale from 100 to 80 than the pretty much same item that's selling for the regular price of 70. Stores artificially raise prices and then of

There is a good argument here, actually. Because of all these people having more and more cars, fuel prices have increased significantly. If you bought a car 10 years ago, you now spend much more money for fuel than you did back then. Shoul

A large part of the Bible is incompatible with Christian beliefs. Then again, "Christian beliefs" isn't a well-defined term; it ranges from "there is some guy up there" to "gays are causing the hurricanes"

We don't use Roman numerals for thousands, why should we do so for millions? The right way is obviously using metric prefixes, so 1k$, 1M$ and 1G$. And don't forget that 'cents' is short for 'centidollars'.

It's pretty simple. There will be low-paying jobs as long as people are willing to work there. McDonald's knows there is more than enough job candidates, so there is no reason for them to raise wages.

Those screenshots look both ugly and hard to read. The colors and font really don't work well. I checked the MetaFilter website and it looks somewhat better, although I still don't like the colors.
