You can learn a lot from the ultra light dudes. I replaced all my travel electronics to be powerable from USB-C. This saved me from a lot cables and adapters. Even re-soldered the cable of my electric shaver to use a USB-C PD adapter PCB.

It's like ham radio: you can buy fully certified working receivers - or build one yourself. Latter one has huge learning curve and gives you full control over the process, the first one not.

It's super popular within the RF industry. But for the normal users - to be honest - most topics are too heavy on complex math. And there's no way to avoid it if you want results. Most advanced radio stuff much more complicate th

That 40kpx x 40kpx scan (800 Megabyte) of that map broke my system. Wow.

It was faster until a few days ago. Now instant payments using SEPA are mandatory and rolled out everywhere.

And it would be much cheaper too. Imaging a group building an managing a robust power supply design for Cubesats that can be immediately ordered from JLCPCB. With a well maintain BOM list.

Designing it is half the fun :-) Chassis aren't expensive from far east - so it's mostly the electronics.

It's a bit like balloon projects that have a transmitter. I think now the 20th group found out that standard GPS receivers stop reporting data of at a specific height because of the COCOM limit implementation (They 'or' speed

If you want to build a "mars rover" yourself you can even simulate that at home :-) Use LoRa in the slowest and most reliable mode as radio link. Write software to plan your tours, firmware updates over super limited bandwidth (d

I bought a few hundred Puyas for my lab as stock for projects. They are quite capable and very cheap uCs to have around.

Depends on your tariffs. In Europe JLCPCB is always an option for PCBs. But as soon you order things with components placed on them you'll go into a different tariff regime and it will be $$$ quickly.

This thing and the new FreeDV audio codec BBFM will be a major breakthrough if they can be combined. The codec offers full 8kHz voice deep down into the noise floor without breaking the legacy channel width. That would bring ham radio back

I'm moving to the opposite direction. For my next trip I'll bringing the Tamron 15-30mm and a D850. That lens is crazy sharp and for getting a full 45MPx resolution picture you often need a very good stabilizer even at "norma

They can use standardized lawful interception interfaces to get all this data. No big need to dig down deep into the radio and protocol layer.

To LTE? Doesn't work there either. There are IMSI catchers - but they all require GSM. At least on Google Pixels you can turn off 2G with a switch. The phone even shows a message about its insecurity. In Germany I'm running 100% o

That's not how cellular networks work. Your IMEI will never be send in clear over the network. Not even back in old 2G networks. If the gov needs your data they can use standardized lawful interception interfaces. This interface offers

Maybe have a look at Intel n100 boxes (Aliexpress -> Topton). They often have 4-5x 2.5GE Ports with high quality Intel cards. They are very cheap (100-200€) and suck not too much current (5-15W). You can run OpenWRT on them using the x8

There are a lot of radar modules out there in the wild. But not all of them are good for doing stuff like this. You need full raw I/Q and DAC access to sweep the frequency.

Infineon 60GHz IoT FMCW radar modules have all datasheets published. That's super rare for Infineon - usually they are the worst NDA-hell on earth. Chinese vendors sell uC+Radar-Module units on Aliexpress for around ~20-30€. They Infin
