Oh right. I am American but my experience with this aspect of the legal system is entirely in Australia. I just assumed that all western legal systems are nearly interchangeable.

Generally speaking, when you get a subpoena you can demand "conduct money" precisely to reimburse this cost. Otherwise the subpoena is unenforceable. Not sure exactly how warrants work

Usually subpoenas and search warrants come with a stamp, and more importantly records are returned to the court registrar, not handed over directly to the person claiming to be servicing a court order. The registrar would presumably say &qu

This strikes me as a Wikipedia Article type caveat. Sure the warning applies to certain categories of article/data, namely the ones where people are jockeying to have the authority of an encyclopaedia / data to reinforce their pol

Are the colours supposed to mean anything? It would be useful to tell at a glance roughly the type of sound I'm going to get (male voice, female voice, instrument, percussion, machine noise, etc)

I wish I could take credit for my example, but it's perhaps the most famous example in all of linguistics and its the thing that made Noam Chomsky's name in the field. To summarise it quickly, Chomsky's contention was that al

With due respect (and I actually mean due respect), this embodies exactly what is wrong with the modern approach to AI. Who cares that there's no examples in the training set. True AI should be able of taking a few steps out of book wi

I disagree profoundly. There are things the brain does we have not yet been able to reproduce with a neural network, or to the extent we have seemingly with excessive resources of training and network size. Therefore there is some salient f

A man goes into court not sure how he got there or what he's accused of. The judge starts saying the opening formalities. "If and only if every member of the jury is convinced you are guilty then this court will convict you."

You misunderstand. It's not about one seat rides or about schedules. Nobody knows the schedule in NY, the train is frequent enough to not care. But changing lines is basically a statistical 5 min of travel time each time you do it.

Not at all. Thomas is the biggest political hack on the bench. The Trump Era appointees were basically federalist society picks and surprisingly institutionalists. Obama only got one person on the bench thanks to McConnells games iirc. So t

Monumentally stupid. In the post pandemic wfh Era, the way for trains to be viable is to offer amenities which let you "work from train". People still like face to face over zoom, but not enough to overcome the friction of commuti

Even simpler, every time you sample random you get the same number of bits of entropy. Sampling once and then cubing spreads the same entropy bits over the interval. Cubing thrice spreads 3x the entropy into the reachable area. Thus you kno
