I'm not sure that im entirely convinced by the arguments against libsodium. Wouldnt it be possible to extend/fork libsodium where one could create a simpler api to automatically force (or atleast default to) correct nonce handling

This is definitely true. But in addition to this, it is insane that it appears that none of the big browsers has begun implementing encrypted storage via touch and so forth. One of the main arguments i see in my organisation to create apps

No, that's not how it works. In some cases sure, but this is not something you just do out of the blue like plugging in a USB.
