That’s an interesting point - I haven’t been thinking about quick stuff. If honestly just do something without a server side if that’s an option? E.g. just use coredata on iOS. Interesting choice of Rust - why that over Scala or Haskell?

IMO - it's actually a really hard call. Error isolation is hard but we all want it. One of the somewhat less controversial versions is failing a single user request (in node or your web framework) with a 5xx on an exception. You'r

To some extent you’re right. Unfortunately as more data about you becomes available, it becomes easier to discriminate against that data. I don’t believe there’s a life insurance company that currently uses genetic testing, but there’s no r

One thing to note about this - idempotency is a very simple concept, but the implementation is actually quite hard. Case-in-point: the kafka producer API recently gained support for "idempotent/transactional capabilities": h

This might be a bit...too far out there, but could there be side channel attacks via cpu heating? Like heating the cpu to near borderline with AVX512 and seeing if a hyperthread causes throttling due to some “heavy” aes instruction. Sounds

On a related note: I’ve recently started using https://hackmd.io/ for markdown. It supports the full gh markdown and more. The best part is the collaborative editing. Big thumbs up to the guys working on the product - I hav

I'm hoping they publish a public post-mortem. Learning from this kind of outage is the best kind experience for engineering - though it's far better when only staging goes down and not prod.

Facebook’s Relay solves the throughput problem by effectively precompiling queries. Their production apps only make a subset of the requests of the full graphql language - and those are frozen at deploy/compile time. In some sense this

Once you need something a bit more heavyweight than Travis (e.g. more CPU) I would highly suggest Buildkite ( https://www.buildkite.com ). It’s a “bring your own machines” solution, which means you can have beefy machines (e.g. vi

Functional languages and strongly typed languages are not the same set. Most functional languages focus on typing (e.g. Haskell, Scala), but there are functional languages that do not (e.g. Clojure, Common LISP). You can easily do functiona

I think they have a similar goal. The difference sounds like gta uses git for change detection while bazel uses hashes to detect changes (hashes include the hashes of the transitive closure of the deps; it’s a dag). The latter is more robus

A small note on a common misconception - the mp4 format is not something that is patented - that's h264. Broadly speaking video files are first a container (e.g. mp4, avi, mkv, ts, etc). A container is sort of like a zip file. It group

Have you looked at buildkite ( http://buildkite.com )? It's a very different approach to CI - you use your own machines. That means you have access to your own s3 buckets, you can talk to your other services and get to use al

One of the things Rich talks about in this talk is semantic versioning is fundamentally broken. In fact any versioning scheme that allows removal is broken. In some sense this model encourages Rich's ideas better - since you can'
