I've been playing with some more advanced feature in postgres (lately, mostly json and jsonb related), and one of the main aspect I'm concern about is the potential pitfalls -- specifically performance pitfalls. Mostly because I f

I've been curious about the Xeon Phi. It seems like they would fit the same purpose as the GPU (especially with the Christmas sale last year that you can get a 31s1p for ~$120-170), it has more memory and similar FLOPS/price. Why

I think the difficulty in understanding have something to do with the way human interpret probability: it seems like frequentist is our default interpretation, and this problem is very much a Bayesian one. The host didn't pick the open

Historically speaking, most of the philosophical question never got an answer by philosophy. They just tend to become obsolete as science advances -- and I consider any question regarding strong AI to be half philosophical by nature (100% u

I'd share the same sentiment. I was really disappointed yesterday when the only comments (after 5 hours of nothing) was a seemingly snark question on the evil of HFT. And to everyone who feel the need to voice their disapproval of HFT:

I'm already running my own server hardware for personal stuffs, so I'm just hesitant to have another one (the proposition is very appealing, but I'm too lazy to maintain both at once).

Everytime I'm reading the story, there is one question that I've never understood: why can't the just shutdown the servers itself? There ought to be some mechanism to do that. I mean, $400 millions is a lot of money to not ju

I looked into the laptop just last week too! But open hardware just mean that we still need some FreeBSD developers to be using it and port the linux drivers (they only make sure that it would be working on stock with linux drivers). From t

Sadly, the Thinkpad X230 seems to be replaced by the newer X240 now. Any idea if it's working just as well? I probably can still get a refurbished X230 somewhere, but the screen is a bit too bad :(.

Besides what arrrg said, part of the reason I used embellish is that I don't know how close it is to the fact: certainly this is the first time I've heard/read about Jobs "attended" Stanford, but I have no idea whet

"Invented the personal computer" might be a bit of a stretch to me. Apple I was one of the first (popular?), but iirc it wasn't the very first one of its kind, nor the only one at the time. But even if it was the first and on

The plan itself looks reasonable to me. It's fairly buzzword-free (comparing to the plans nowadays), but maybe the buzzword back then just became common vocabulary to us. The most interesting thing on the plan to me is the staff page:

In a sense, the "one thing" that JIRA does really well is being bloated (and through fulfilling the check box process). And I'm only half joking. I mean, have anyone ever successfully been productive at using the thing? To me
