This goes back to another point I've historically made which is that except for storage devices, pretty much nothing supports those speeds. I think there are some USB adapters that don't use alt mode and that can have some advant

Possibly they stick with it because it's usable (ish) and it was driving everyone up the wall when they'd change it?

I remember one time on the bus a commuter had his full sized bike in the bus. This was a full sized with plenty of space bus, so it wasn't really in the way at all. The bike rack was full and it was a summer day. So probably the guy fi

I actually like the 3.2 naming. Gen is speed, "by" is width. It puts it very roughly on par with PCIe's naming which nobody complains about. I just don't like that USB 3, USB 3.1, and USB 3.2 are the same things. And tha

If other threads can pull out of the dequeue, is there an advantage to not just having one common dequeue for all threads?

It's still not named well but the way to understand it is: gen 1 is 5gbps/lane, gen 2 is 10. x1 is 1 lane, x2 is 2. So really there are only 4 combinations, 5, 10, 10, 20. It just took them a really long and windy time to get th

Because USB can do 2 lanes of 10 gbps. So that's 20gbps. 10 < 20. Thunderbolt isn't part of the equation here because it's not a thunderbolt device or thunderbolt host (even if the port is thunderbolt capable). The reason

Sadly I got my current watch for free and it still works. And I don't really get dressed up for stuff. So while yes they certainly do have a series of nice looking watches, I can't justify the purchase at the moment.

There are reportedly solar smart watches. I do wish my dumb watch was a tad smarter in that it doesn't get automatic time updates, but that's not impossible even without a phone. I haven't found one that's waterproof, so

Yeah I think even if we didn't have the stars, there's plenty of other natural phenomena to spark science. Sparks being one of them. But pretty much any field other than astronomy could be a starting point. Meteorology is certainl

The xilinx 7 series got extended out to what? 2045? That'll be a 35 ish year run. Still nothing from them can compete on price, functionality, and availability. At some point maybe we've just solved it. Bow and arrows were fairly

But people still want results immediately. Which is the explanation I've seen for why nuclear isn't as big. Takes multiple times longer for a nuclear plant to come online vs coal. So some aspects are decades, others are one politi

I don't think you understand the point of PWM then which is ok. A resistor wouldn't provide runtime control of the power going to the motor, unless you had a programmable resistor which would likely explode from the current induce

I mean I would indeed consider that a comment on the question rather than an answer. Unless the question was "why doesn't the work with less than 128GB of RAM?"

Much agreed. Early OOM is so much better for me than swap. I have 128G on my work laptop, 96 on my personal desktop. If it doesn't fit in that, it probably means I'd need a terabyte or infinite amount of swap and that's just

Yes, for power savings. But I'd need to do a bit of a study on my code to see if it's even worth it. Since the majority of it doesn't use the FPU, it could help. But it might not be worth the effort.

If you read the Wikipedia you linked you'll see that gravitational potential != gravity. So no. If the author had said voltage is analogous to gravitational potential, sure. But they didn't. They said gravity. Here's the page

Thoughts as a computer engineer: 1. The motor demo didn't work for me (Firefox on Android). Nice to say it was made by Claude. 2. Voltage isn't like gravity. It's literally called potential. Voltage is the water being high up

Interesting. I was just thinking about this because of another post on floating point. I'm wondering if I can disable the fpu every so often and turn it on only if code needs it and it raises an exception.

Indentation is mandatory, but when are spaces? Imo, if you're running static analysis it'll take care of types well enough. Sometimes I need a cast but not often. Contrasting that to helping a college roommate with Arduino code he
