Or if you'd like to help preventing linux monoculturalization of datacenters, MNX Triton or vanilla SmartOS are very good options too.

Why go linux? MNX Triton and vanilla SmartOS are good hypervisor alternatives too.

Not everything has to be linux. It's good to have options for avoiding monoculturalization.

And it's great as anyone can use it in whichever way they want since machine generated content does not have copyright protections. We will finally achieve the dream of everything being in public domain!

Docker is actually not that great because you can't run it everywhere. BSD and illumos have no native docker support for example.

I use the Wombat[0] with wireless Logitech MX desktop on my Quadra and it works wonderfully. Key mappings can also be fully customized if needed. [0] https://www.bigmessowires.com/usb-wombat/

Would pass-through to VM work? At $work I'm running SmartOS servers with GPU passing to a ubuntu bhyve for the occasional CUDA compute and it works wonderfully. Wonder if similar could be possible with Helios?

Not everything needs to be linux. Besides, if monocultures are supposed to be harmful, why is linux being thrown to everything nowadays? Very dangerous to have a single point of failure in (critical) applications.

The fact that it's not on linux is one of the great things about it. There is too much linux on critical infrastructure already and the monoculture just keeps on growing. At least with Oxide there is a glimmer of hope for a better futu

Because not everything needs to be linux. In fact, this modern trend of running linux everywhere from critical infrastructure to IoT devices is worrying as it feels like a monoculture is starting to rise its ugly head once again.

One option could be to run illumos-based system if you need linux compatibility. Lx-zones work pretty well unless very specific capabilities are needed. Of course there's also bhyve for such scenarios.

Triton is now being developed by MNX Solutions and seems to be doing quite well. We run Triton and SmartOS in production and the linux compatibility works via lx-zones just fine. Only some of the linux-locked software, which usually means d

For me there's really no reason to go with linux over BSD (or illumos). For the occasional linux-locked software one can always run lx-zones or full bhyve HVMs anyway.

A lot of people are also locked-in linux if they have to use e.g. docker or kubernetes, not to mention FOSS hooked to systemd or other linux-specific technologies. Say goodbye to compatibility and portability to other systems.
