This doesn't take into account the future Apple is trying to push with iOS where they have control over what you are a'allowed' to run on your phone. Loss of freedom is an important issue and without competition to keep them

While I respect the effort, this doesn't really do much about thwarting the NSA, assuming that's a big part of the reason for this. The suspicion is that they have the master keys anyway and can decrypt SSL/TLS at will.

From my understanding, it's really not. An unlocked bootloader means that with physical access you can install software on the phone without wiping it first. With root you have full (controlled) access to the file system. You can actua

I would think Google would be one of the last companies protesters would be taking their anger out against, but I guess for them locally it's the big target. Google really is pretty well behaved socially on the net and IRL as companies

Non--browser-integrated password managers with 2-factor authentication are one of the best security solutions around right now. Every step away from that costs you security, but probably is still a good ways better than using passwords alon

The $25 mentioned for distributing apps to friends is actually only if you want to do it through the Google Play store. Your friends can install any app you give them as an APK file free.

GateKeeper will not arrive on iOS, rather the converse will happen. Apple will lock down OSX. You will need a developer license to install 'non-approved' software. The success of iOS has demonstrated to them that people like velve

I hope people realize this and intentionally avoid platform restricted products like iCloud, iMessage, Facetime, etc. It's especially annoying that Apple generally just adds proprietary extensions to perfectly functional open protocols
