2 pieces of advice: 1) Do not make me watch a video to see what you're doing. Write some text -- you should be able to explain it in one sentence and then have some supporting text if you want/need to clarify things. 2) If you really only

Unless I'm mistaken, you're still thinking of file writes. I'm talking about using your SSD as "slow RAM". Your statement is true, but it doesn't account for the use of SSD as something that could be used for very large ephemeral data str

Am I missing something or is this pure filesystem cache? What happens instead if you configure an SSD as your swap device? Wouldn't the OS then be able to use the SSD more generally as a piece of the memory hierarchy?

I would have thought the biggest performance boost would have come for databases based on B-tree-like structures on large datasets. You have to read to read and read to write. Every depth of the tree that doesn't fit into main memory costs

Python and Ruby aren't functional languages. You can write code in them in a functional manner, but for anything more than toy programs you _likely_ wouldn't. They're heavily Object-Oriented, but could probably safely be called multi-paradi

Could someone describe SecondMarket? Particularly, I don't understand how the stuff traded there is illiquid in some context, but evidently not in _their_ context.

An important distinction, though, is that with software, particularly server-side software, it's fine to get it wrong several times, as you can fix it quickly and all in one place. The difficulty increases as you move to desktop software an

If you search on indeed.com, perl has more hits than python and ruby combined by a solid margin. Certainly many of these are for sys admin positions, but I still think it's a pretty telling statistic.

It seems that if you know your page size and you know your record size, you can compute the optimal size into which you should break your records into chunks and link the chunks with pointers. This causes more memory accesses, but surely t

We need an "Ask HN" for cool tools. Maybe there's already a SO question about it. I hadn't heard of vmtouch and probably tons of other things people here use.

My guess is that the upvotes are more about telling people who have social media codependency to shut up rather than the particular rant about how they're bitching about something they're not paying for, but I could be wrong. I'm sick of th

One way this sometimes happens is that the company has to pay you while you're not working. I know of a guy who worked at Capital One (credit card company) who left and Capital One had to pay his salary to him for one year while he agreed n

Simply profiting does not mean that you're playing the game optimally. While small organizations can't afford a research division, Oracle certainly can. You'd think a company in the business of storing data might want to keep the guy who c

I'll make no comments about the SEO viability of the name, but I find these ending-in-"ly" names (I've seen a few of them recently) atrocious. An "ly" is one of the strongest markers in the English language for a part of speech: an adverb.

Direct links to github projects really shouldn't be HN topics. An article, explanation, etc would make more sense -- maybe the github wiki link for a project, if it actually explains something. Even that doesn't work for this project, tho
