I thought it was strange that they highlighted that sentence as well since the rest of the article goes on to dispute that. I'm guessing whoever made the excepts didn't read the rest very well.

An older, maybe more impressive example (just because of the age of it, or maybe because of my interest in it) is the hydrological systems built in Rome itself. I'll have to dig out the book I read this out of, but there is some eviden

This doesn't solve the direct issue, but I use emacs --daemon and either use it to edit files on other computers, or ssh into my main computer to access the daemon directly. It really simplified my workflow trying to get configurations

Makes sense. I'm a CPA working in audit, and see a huge untapped market. The dirty secret of the audit industry is, at least outside Big 4, the way audit is done is largely the same as it would have been in the 80s - except with Excel.

The Avro Arrow being destroyed is a meme in Canada, but there's a lot of questions at least in the historical community on whether that was a blessing in disguise. The state of the art was rapidly moving away from bombers coming over t

There's a lot of legends like that in the Isles. For example, the first King of Britain is supposed to have been Brutus of Troy, descendant of Aeneas. The easiest explanation is that there is a great incentive on behalf of rulers to cl

I agree completely with your points, and I'm sorry be that guy, but "literally retarded" is offensive language and is frankly below the level of discourse of HN. I'm not one to be the PC police but really, come on. You c

I would love suggestions of French language sites! I have found them quiet hard to find, especially of a more than surface level discussion.

I forgot about these until this post. I used to have one when they came out, and I worked at a retail store where all of our kiosks had these. Does anyone else get electric shocks often from them? I would get them anytime I touched the meta

Is it? You've taken two facts (1. Interface redesign and 2. 50% growth last year) and assigned causation to the first. In my persepctive, reddit has been digging into the cultural psyche for a long time and has been growing steadily. T

There's an attitude on HN that "my bosses who know and study business are idiots and don't understand anything about tech", usually in terms of either wanting bosses to get out of the way or improve themselves so they ar

As a native English, but non-Apple user, you're right this is confusing nomenclature, but I intuited what it was supposed to mean.

I live here in Ontario, and you're right the sky did not fall. The rounding isn't a big deal really, even on scale. It rounds to the nearest nickel, which is or is not in favour of the consumer/business. For example, $2.07 ro

To be fair, where I'm from, "London" would probably refer to London, ON, but that's just because I live in Southern Ontario. So it's not like no one has heard of it. On the other hand: no one in Southern Ontario w

Taxes are assessed at a percentage of income. If a fine is deductible, you have lower income, and your taxes are lower, yes. But you paid the government for that right! If your tax rate is 30% and you pay a $1000 fine, you save $300 in taxe
