One drawback with R is that in computations like this, several intermediate data structures with one dimension equal in length to nrow(dfrm) are allocated. Traversing an iterable of tuples is a simple way to think about it, is efficient, an

R's documentation is fantastic (the stuff summoned up by ?foo). If you want bad documentation, look to scipy. (I'm not particularly an R fan. It's great for stats, numerical calculations and plotting, but it's not a good programming languag

What has pandas borrowed from R, other than a 2D data structure with heterogeneously-typed columns? I guess the data frame merge invocations are similar. (I know patsy/statsmodels are introducing R's formula syntax to python, but that's not

I also always thought Eulogy was supposed to be about Bill Hicks but it always confused me that it sounded so critical. Thanks for the correction.

I'd like a second click in the date field to dismiss the date picker. That doesn't happen in the demo at least.

It's fantastic that nearly all the software I enjoy using is free, and fascinating that that model works. But, here we're talking silverware, not software. Things to put in your backpack to go traveling are not free. And if they're the "bes

I think you're wrong to criticize HN users for their negative reaction to this post and to associate their criticism with a decline in HN culture. The post will naturally be unattractive to many reasonable and pleasant people who would be g

Committing untested code is an excellent idea. You should do it several times a day. Pushing untested code to a shared branch on a public remote is a bad idea.

Really? I'd definitely commit before running tests. You can always use reset to redo the commit later. Branches are cheap, commits are cheap.

+1 emacs users should definitely try magit for this. I use the git CLI a ton but never for interactive staging at the hunk / sub-hunk level.

I really highly recommend "Foundations of Python Network Programming" by Brandon Rhodes and John Goerzen. It's just one of the best technical books I've read, from the opening example onwards. http://www.apress.com/9781430230038
