Kind of like LISP. When I read McCarthy's original papers, it had that same feeling of simplicity, and you could easily see how it mapped directly to the hardware. Original papers are often the best. Chuck Moores book on FORTH was f

The one that really did make a dramatic difference is notable because it didn't have the human voice involved. I'm talking about the Star Wars theme. In that one, the difference between major and minor was dramatic. But for voc

I don't think he is tone deaf. I have a good ear for pitch, but I'm not a trained musician. I could hear minor differences in most of those songs, but the difference was minor, not dramatic. When I'm listening to music, and

Don, thank you for all the details. I've enjoyed your writings since I found your website in 2000. Too bad NeWS didn't take off. What would it take to revive it? Is the Linux framebuffer stable enough to have another go at it?

Thank you for explaining. I disagree, but then, I started with the Commodore 64 and BASIC, and have missed them ever since. C and LISP version 1 sort of fit in the same space. I hate any language that hides the machine from me. Also don

You mean Theo and Linus? Yes.

In that thread, it mentiond that NeWS had "problems". Can you tell us what those problems were?

With a description like that, he's got one confirmed pre-sale of that book. I'd pay up to $50 for it. Especially if he tells us what are the dozen core API calls that could replace X.

I didn't realize people were so sensitive in the field. Compared to Linus, Theo de Raadt, Richard Stallman, etc, Jon seemed to be cruising at a comfortable level of Germanic straight-forward truth-telling, no real a holishness I coul

I would like to hear more. The Unix core API is pretty simple and durable; what was better than it? Other than Plan9? SmallTalk doesn't really count.

Very nice work. I wonder if PilBox exposes the JAVA API to picoLISP the way Clojure does?

Thank you, I will. I also wonder, does your API take context into account? For instance, depending on WHO is talking, and WHAT they've recently talked about in the recording, one transcription may be preferable to another. People of

Been wanting something like this for years. I have a bunch of old speeches and radio shows I'd like to transcribe. They all have "terms of art", and noone at Google would tell me how to train their API to adapt to my use ca

I don't, but I'd like to. Most of the online documentation on Foxpro is old, and doesn't convey the magic that I've seen happen with it. I'd love to see some combination of Delphi with Foxpro, probably with LISP s

Cool! Thanks for the hard work, and the insight. For those of us that don't speak Verilog, do you have a paper or some other writeup of the things that make MMIX less than ideal? Other than the scaling up/scaling down. Does th

Wow, that video is a lecture by one of the leaders of RISC-V. I had no idea there was a RISC-2 and RISC-3, and that they were optimized for SmallTalk and Lisp respectively. Wonder what Alan Kay has to say about RISC-V? He's been ban

So, how does RISC-V compare with Donald Knuth's MMIX instruction set? Did they use it as a starting base? Consider it at all? Be cool to program MMIX in actual hardware.

I've been wondering how RISC-V compares to Donald Knuth's MMIX ISA. Surely MMIX is also freely available, probably Public Domain or something?

Thanks for the reference, I'll look into that. How does the performance and memory usage of deliminted continuations compare to implementing the control flow constructs directly?

Really good article. Interesting to see what the issues were with Scheme back then. Funny that they loved continuations, but still hadn't figured out how to do them "in the general case". It is the general case of continua

After a few years of using newLisp, I started using Eithers in my C and LISP code. Didn't know you called them that. I guess the idea has been "in the air" for a couple years now. Possibly people are being inspired by the
