It cuts both ways. JetBrains is free to close source it, but likewise, anyone can continue to maintain it too. JetBrains has no more power here than anyone else, except for the dev time of their employees.

If there's an issue, how are they supposed to know about it? Via osmosis? Even if they should have found it earlier, they didn't, so now what? You should tell them, so they can fix it.

QEMU can run VMs that are a different architecture than the host. There's obviously a performance penalty to doing that, but it can be done.

I don't think you get what this change is. You can disable nonfree drivers on the kernel level, and it will make sure they aren't loaded. You can also allow them, as many distros do. Nvidia took their driver and had it lie to the

Economic waste, as it seemed the previous commenter meant, can definitely be profitable. The cleanup of that waste can be treated as an externality that the company doesn't have to pay for at all - that was done a lot in prior decades
