I like it when systems have a separate "dark mode," with grays, and "OLED dark mode," with true blacks for high contrast/battery saving on OLED displays. There are a few Android apps that do it and I wish it were mo

The rise in home prices isn't due to unrestricted market action, though. It's happening because of a patchwork of local regulations making it difficult to build new housing, and other worse concepts like California's neo-feud

Yes, it's not because of the OLED tech but due to the weird pixel arrangements many of them use.

My favorite recent one is how the mobile division started refusing to use new Exynos chips from the semiconductor division. Imagine if Apple designed and built an A16 chip and then put Qualcomm SoCs in the iPhone.

Yes, at least in smartphone displays. I believe the closest competitor is LG, and their displays are noticeably, visibly worse.

> the small and lower cost place you bought 10 years ago went up in price too. Exactly, that's the problem. There exist people who did not buy houses 10 years ago, due to personal failings such as being teenagers at the time. Yet th

"Buying small" is often no longer possible due to the insane increase in housing cost relative to wages, making that advice out of touch. Going on to blame this on the youth and their nightlives doesn't exactly reverse this i

This is completely ignoring the increase in house prices, unless by "not the most desirable location" you mean "move to the middle of Kansas." The fact is, in many areas, buying any house at all is not feasible for the v

I don't have access to 175B for comparison. In a vacuum, 30B isn't very good. In the neighborhood of GPT-NeoX-20B, I think, but not good. It repeats itself easily and has a tenuous relationship with the topic. It's still much

OPT-175B isn't publicly available, sadly. It's available to research institutions, which is much better than "Open"AI, but it doesn't help us hobbyists/indie researchers much.

I've been trying this, and with compression on (4 bits) you can fit the entire 30B model on the 3090.

128GB, but by turning on compression I managed to fit the whole thing on the GPU. I did try it off a mix of RAM and SSD as well, and it was slower but still usable. Presumably disk speed matters a lot.

After turning on compression I was able to fit the whole thing in GPU memory and then it became much faster. Not ChatGPT speeds or anything, but under a minute for a response in their chatbot demo. A few seconds in some cases.

You have to change the --percent flag. It takes some experimentation. The format is three pairs of 0-100 integers, one for parameters, attention cache and hidden states respectively. The first zero is percent on GPU, the second one is perce

Firefox was slower than other browsers at the time. A lot slower, and buggier. There are plenty of benchmarks. I’m a Firefox user now, but before Quantum I didn’t touch it because it really was terribly dated.

Every year Apple talks about their commitment to gaming, and every year macOS gaming gets worse. It was never in great shape, but switching to Metal, dropping 32-bit support, and launching Apple Silicon killed it deader than a doornail. The

The 80s is too far back, probably 2003 was the last peak, but since it became clear Afghanistan and Iraq were disasters the war propaganda complex was muted for years. Remember when Romney said Russia was the US's biggest threat in 201

I can only match anecdote with anecdote, but I've seen two Lightning ports fail and zero USB-C. Micro-usb did have a tendency to break but not more than mini-usb, and that's not anecdotal-- the port design was so prone to failure

Counterpoint: in USB-C, the crushable, breakable part with the spring is in the cable. With Lightning, it's in the $1500 phone. Yubikeys are an unfortunate edge case but normally it's a lot easier to get a new cable.
