I guess it depend on how one sees something to have value. There are mathematicians only consider research level mathematics have value. There are some subfield of mathematics like algebraic geometry that take years for a math grad student

I'm on the other end. Once I found that I did all the theoretical CS things easily and doing amazingly bad in all "applied" cs courses. I know it's time to switch out of CS and enter math.

Thanks. hlint-like suggestions are always welcome. I have no idea what was in my mind when I wrote foldr ((:).(y!!)) [] x

This challenge is the first real life program I wrote with Haskell. https://github.com/Mgccl/mgccl-haskell/blob/master/random/un... (so it seems I don't like to specify the type of my functions...) Explanation is here: http://chaoxuprime

Updated. thx to gwern. Now I know the existence of hlint. Now, without the type declaration, white space, comments, it's only 6 lines, and looks even better. :)

Just did a Haskell version of spark. It supports in 9 lines of code (exclude comment + empty line) Double instead of just Int. Negative numbers. https://github.com/Mgccl/mgccl-haskell/blob/master/random/sp...

The busy beaver function gives very loose upper bound... A better bound: If the computer can be described with $n$ bit of information, and a program did not terminate with $2^n+1$ operations, then the program has a infinite loop. $n$ is usu

He did not solve for 5 variables, he solved 4 and the last one can be anything. It doesn't have to be in that relation. Example, 2 variable, 1 equation. x + y - y = 0. Here x must be 0.

I usually refer people to read What Is Mathematics For? published on the Notices of AMS. http://www.ams.org/notices/201005/rtx100500608p.pdf In short, most people will not use math more advanced than arithmetic, unless they are mathematic

Nice, I was thinking of building the site that contains every published math problems or algorithm to generate them.

Note this is a course in EECS department. Where are you from? In US, at least in NY state, junior level high school course can't cover probability into that extent. Not all CS people need all those math, some of them just want to be program

The online judges I'm talking about are like UVa. http://uva.onlinejudge.org/ People usually use it for ACM-ICPC training. Every Oj I know of can fulfill 1 and 2. For 3, the innovation is the badge system. No.4 is nice, it closes the gap

Good idea. I like games where the rules are simple, but the strategies can be complex. Like chess. Are there bot vs bot chess games around?

Why do you want to make a new social network? If you goal is to make money, then ignore this comment. If your goal is to make something better than facebook, you want to ask yourself, why you want to reinvent the wheel? Unless you have some
