It's different as ST is a chip manufacturer. If you make clones, chances are they'll only work with their chips, so you end up ordering from them anyway. Win-win. Boards could have an open license though.

Aren't we making userspace/kernel space communication a lot more efficient with io-uring, though? Likewise, eBPF allows userspace programs to perform some work inside kernel space to reduce syscalls. I wonder if io-uring won'

Not sure you need a big battery when you have almost 24/7 sunlight, depending on the altitude. Of course, latency is another issue.

Sorry, I should have been clearer that I was specifically talking about gate length. Transistor size (occupied area) decreases, but that's mainly because FinFET uses vertical gates, not planar technology, so you can stack them closer (

I agree this is the primary context, but I've seen unmaintained (or very old) software being reffered to as "bit rotting" by extension. As in, forward compatibility might break due to obsolete dependencies, etc.

One of the issues with putting servers in orbit is cooling; you can't just use fans in space. On the other hand, real estate is pretty cheap. Servicing is hard, though, and micrometeorites are another risk. Plus launch costs being high

A usual reminder that we're not getting smaller. This is marketting speech, transistor gates are stuck at 20ish nanometers. What's still increasing is transistor density, but "Dennard's Scaling" is dead. we stopped
